Grade 5-7–This drab but systematic survey offers students an overview of our study of the Red Planet, from ancient observations of its seemingly irregular path through the sky to NASA's April 2004 decision to extend the missions of rovers Spirit and Opportunity. Despite rare and clumsy efforts to rev it up ("After screaming through space at sixteen thousand miles per hour…"), the prose is as dry as the Martian surface, and several of the accompanying, faded-looking black-and-white photos or diagrams add neither information nor insight. Still, determined readers will find plenty of current information, plus a strongly made case for sending humans to Mars, and, to close, particularly thorough and useful resource lists. While Seymour Simon's Destination: Mars (HarperCollins, 2000) or Stuart Murray and Edward S. Barnard's Mars (DK, 2004) have far superior browser appeal, Parks's book is a suitable choice for deeper subject collections

Grade 9 Up-This revision of the International Encyclopedia of Astronomy (Orion, 1987; o.p.) is more than just an update, as many entries have been rewritten and offer greater detail. Seven major essays from the original have been deleted, but there are approximately 500 additional articles and numerous color photos. The more than 3000 alphabetical entries cover celestial objects of all kinds; concepts, theories, and methodology of astronomy; observatories; space exploration; and biographical entries on astronomers, astronauts, and cosmonauts. Articles average 5 to 10 per page, but are thorough in their explication of the essentials. While very readable, the subject matter may challenge some students. However, excellent cross-references ease the search for further clarification. Sidebars add information on constellations, and numerous tables provide data on astronomical formations, planets, the Moon, and stars. A list of almost 150 contributors is included, but the individual articles are not signed. The layout of this edition is fresher and more colorful. Spectacular, informative photos appear throughout and outstanding diagrams help explain concepts and equipment. Also included are star maps and keys to symbols, measurements, conversion factors, and the Greek alphabet. This sophisticated encyclopedia fills a gap between Valerie Illingworth and John O. E. Clark's less comprehensive Facts On File Dictionary of Astronomy (Checkmark, 2000), and Paul Murdin's more expansive but less attractive Encyclopedia of Astronomy and Astrophysics (Institute of Physics, 2001). Due to significant changes in the field, libraries will want to replace their older edition with this superior, up-to-date version

There are many atlases showing features on the surface of the earth, but this book is the only one (in late 1998, at least) to cover the whole universe. Patrick Moore, who has hosted BBC Radio's popular The Sky at Night program for more than 40 years, gives straightforward, though not simplistic, explanations of astronomical objects of every order of magnitude. He includes charts of every mapped body in the solar system (except Earth), as well as maps and guides to every constellation. Throughout this encyclopedic work, Moore emphasizes information likely to be useful to amateur astronomers. He provides better coverage of comets and variable stars than do most general works, for instance, because these are areas where amateurs can make important observations. Although he includes a number of gorgeously colored pictures from the Hubble space telescope and other top-flight observatories, Moore retains a focus on what you yourself might be able to see. An excellent single-volume reference, Atlas of the Universe is also a good starting point for your own exploration of the heavens.

Я настоятельно рекомендую эту книгу всем тем, кто хочет для себя открыть мир аквариума. Из издававшейся в последние лет 5 аквариумной литературы на русском языке, это самая современая и удачная книга.
