The fighter Spad VII, which appeared at the Western Front in summer 1916, was actually one of the first Allied fighters designed and built thoroughly to serve one purpose only. And it was to win absolute supremacy in the air over German air forces. Disregarding some initial difficulties, the airplane proved to be so efficient that it was used for a long time after military operations of the Great War had ceased serving successfully in the air forces of many countries and taking part in local conflicts almost all over the world. The popularity of this machine is clearly illustrated by the fact that there were situations in which Spad VIIs met in air combats of conflicted parties, which both had them in the active service at the same time. The last "sevens" were dismissed from the service only in the late 20s. Here is a history of this legendary airplane.

For years the large number of fairly intact aircraft which survived the warin remote former battlegrounds in the Pacific have been the subeject of misleading stories and hearsay. Almost every effort to produce photographic evidence of such finds has been met with secrecy or a notable lack of co-operation. In the meantime the most desirable aircraft continue to be salvaged by those in the know "in the know" and some even made to fly again. Charles Darby now rectifies this frustrating situation by presenting for the first time the results of his first-hand inspection of nearly 2,000 aircraft wrecks and crash sites over a period of some 15 years, together with the details of some of the many salvage operations in which he participated in. Published in 1979 this book still remains the bible for WW2 aircraft wrecks in the south west pacific. Vivid photographs and concise descriptions provide valuable information to wreck enthusiasts or people wishing to find information of the circumstances of relatives killed in WW2.

In this second volume of a four-volume set, Mr. Elliott continues his presentation of the US Navy and Marine Corps aircraft colors and markings during the decade of the 1940s. From the opening of the decade with its still colorful approach to aircraft recognition, to the close of the 40s with its more somber wartime color schemes, the author brings to the reader fresh information, photographs and illustrations. The various combatants in this world-wide struggle sought paint and protection solutions which would prolong the combat life of their aircraft while at the same time also sought to devise markings by which friendly forces could be recognized form those of the enemy. The US Navy and Marine Corps aircraft of the period certainly reflected these goals. Complex, yet effective approaches to the problem have been set forth by the author who meticulously documents each change in painting and aircraft marking, giving us new insight into this fascinating period of aircraft history. 324 photographs, 57 colour photos, 21 colour artwork and 48 unit insignia, 28 paint chips.
