This IUTAM Symposium concerned an important domain of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics nowadays. It focused on the problem of flow separation and of its control. It achieved a unified approach regrouping the knowledge provided from theoretical, experimental, numerical simulation and modelling aspects for unsteady separated flows (incompressible and compressible regimes) and included efficient control devices to achieve attenuation or suppression of separation. The subject areas covered important themes in the domain of fundamental research as well as in the domain of applications. These themes received a great deal of impetus from international research groups, including research Institutes and industrial companies especially in Aeronautics in various countries and associating leading Government Programs.

В 1916 г. Леонид Викторович Ассур защитил диссертацию на тему «Исследование плоских механизмов с низшими парами с точки зрения их структуры и классификации». Η.Ε. Жуковский, бывший одним из оппонентов на защите, отмечал, что наиболее ценным в работе являются не отдельные методы исследования различных кинематических цепей, а принцип образования механизмов путем последовательного нарощения кинематических цепей, получивших впоследствии название «групп Ассура». Сравнение работы Л. В. Ассура с другими работами, посвященными структуре механизмов, в частности, с работами Бурместера, Грюблера, Раттергауза и других последователей школы Рело, показывает, что им вопрос о структуре механизмов изучен несравненно глубже и обстоятельнее. Только Л. В. Ассуру в данной работе удалось блестяще преодолеть многие трудности и создать законченную систему классификации плоских механизмов, вытекающую из теории структуры механизмов и определяющую их кинематические и динамические свойства. Работа Л. В. Ассура явилась наиболее крупным шагом вперед в теории структуры механизмов после появления работы Рело и должна быть поставлена наравне с работами П. Л. Чебышева, Ф. Рело и П. О. Сомова, каждой из которых открывались новые страницы в теории структуры механизмов.
