This book addresses some of the baffling questions encountered at the final frontier of space and time related to particle physics and cosmology in the context of recent iconoclastic observations and developments. When particle physics stagnated in the early seventies, a new development emerged - String Theory. For the past 25 years, String Theory, popularly called the Theory of Everything, has mesmerized not just scientists, but also the general public. Yet a closer scrutiny today reveals that it is no more than a mathematical marvel. It has neither predicted anything nor has it been anywhere near verification. We are essentially where we were in the early seventies. Another chronic problem that Einstein had abandoned was the unified description of his theory of General Relativity that deals with the Universe at large and Electromagnetism which is to do with particles. Such a description is necessary even if it warrants a radical departure from our time-honoured ideas of space and time. A bright spot has now appeared in Cosmology. Iconoclastic observations in the past years have shown that the Universe is actually accelerating, driven by a mysterious Dark Energy. This book takes the lay reader through these uncharted waters and mind-boggling developments on an unimaginable journey from the ultra small to the farthest stretches conceivable, via such imagination defying concepts as extra dimensions and multiple universes. |

What exactly is human ageing? Can it be slowed down? These questions have puzzled scientists and laymen alike for generations, and continue to do so today. The author addresses these thought-provoking issues by challenging pre-conceived notions of age-perception, age-acceptance and inter-age relations. Pertinent matters of age-related communication are dealt with, and the reader is treated to a grand tour of the latest theories of ageing, age-related biological changes and age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer's Disease. Here, the author's expertise in age-related eye diseases truly comes into its own. Weale's unique work not only underlines important genetic and avoidable risk factors but gives ample consideration to possible consequences stemming from different early lifestyles. Readers will re-consider their ideas of what it means to age, and gain a better understanding of what can and cannot slow down the process of ageing. |

No epoch of remote history can be so relevant to modern interests as the period of transition between the ancient and the medieval world, when a familiar order of things visibly died and teas supplanted by a new. Other transitions become apparent only in retrospect; that of the age of Constantine, like our own, was patent to contemporaries. Old institutions, in the sphere of culture as of government, had grown senile; economic balances were altered; peoples hitherto on the peripheries of civilization demanded attention, and a new and revolutionary social doctrine with an enormous emotional appeal was spread abroad by men with a religious zeal for a new and authoritarian cosmopolitanism and with a religious certainty that their end justified their means. For us, contemporary developments have made the analogy inescapable, but Jacob Burckhardt's insight led him to a singularly clear apprehension of the meaning of the transition almost a century ago, and the analogy implicit in his book is the more impressive as it was unpremeditated. |

An alternative guide to St Petersburg. Who are the real Petersburgers? What is portwine? Why is it important to be kind? Are Petersburgers just very inept? Why could you never mistake a Petersburger for a Muscovite? The Other St Petersburg asks the questions other guidebooks are afraid to ask and comes up with the answers no one else has yet dared to publish. The Other St Petersburg contains - amongst much else - translations of short stories by Daniil Kharms (The Old Woman, 1939) and Yevgeny Zvyagin (Shades of the Hermitage, 1983), and absolutely no mention of the Kirovsky Ballet, matryoshki, Peter the Great or what to do when your baggage gets rerouted via Melbourne. |

A visual feast of 400 dazzling images, this is a comprehensive survey of the genre over the last century. The book also offers an overview of the development of fashion, as seen through the eyes of the greatest illustrators of the day. Early in the century fashion illustration reflected new, liberating currents in art and culture, such as the exoticism of the Ballets Russes, while the postwar period saw inspiration from the great Parisian couturiers. After the dominance of the celebrity fashion photographer in the '60s, a new generation of illustrators emerged, embracing the medium of the computer, while many returned to more traditional techniques.

Cercidiphyllum is a relict angiosperm bringing to us a flavor of Cretaceous Period. Its reproductive morphology was interpreted, in the spirit of the dominant evolutionary paradigm, as inflorescences of reduced flowers represented by solitary pistils and groups of stamens. Evolutionary significance of Cercidiphyllum has long been anticipated despite the unpersuasive morphological interpretation and irrelevant paleobotanical evidence. This work was initially intended for paleobotanists who willingly compare their fossil material with the living Cercidiphyllum, using schematic descriptions and illustrations of traditional plant morphology. The idea behind this book was to provide an adequately illustrated material for such comparisons. Yet it turned out that there are more things in Cercidiphyllum than are dreamed of in our traditional plant morphology. Some of morphological findings of this study, such as the replacement of the floral structure by leafy shoots or the subtending bract-leaf conversion are relevant to the experimental "evo-devo" studies and bear on general problems of angiosperm evolution. In Cercidiphyllum, the vegetative body is partly or mostly produced in the reproductive line, suggesting a neotenic ancestral form, in which the vegetative development was drastically reduced relative to reproductive domain. Later in evolutionary history, the vegetative body was rebuilt in the lineage on the way to arboreal forms, with foliation of the floral receptacles and the carpel-leaf convergence as side effects of the process. |

This taxonomic review of the Cuban Miridae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) treats 105 species in 57 genera. Twelve new species are described, two new synonyms are recognized, and four previously recorded species are removed from the list. All genera and species are diagnosed, and a thorough literature review and information on host plants and distribution are given. Male genitalia are illustrated and a color image is provided for nearly all species. Identification keys to subfamilies, tribes, genera, and species are included, and the biogeography of the Cuban and West Indian mirid fauna is discussed. This work will form a solid foundation for future research on the plant bugs of Cuba, providing a summary of the information known about each species and the means to accurately identify them. |
