Weight loss is a common reaction to infection, injury, or chronic disease. Many well-known host responses to illness contribute to muscle loss. Ensuring adequate lean body mass is of major concern in health care. Bioactive peptides and medical foods represent new approaches for addressing the metabolic derangements and nutritional defi cits that contribute to unwanted weight loss. This book describes the latest research on the application of bioactive peptides for improving nutrition and health. We present the background science in Chapters 1 through 5 on the relations between illness and muscle weight loss. As in other recent volumes, the several themes treated here are not directly related to each other, except for their common bond to physical acoustics. The theme of the first two chapters is surface waves in acoustics and observation of the related acoustic radiation from plane and curved surfaces. The first chapter surveys the essential results obtained concerning acoustic surface waves on curved surfaces and relates them to the corresponding plane surface waves. Starting with a classification of surface and lateral waves on flat surfaces and a description of their properties, the chapter proceeds to discuss surface waves generated by sound scattering on curved surfaces. More general excitation mechanisms are mentioned briefly. The second chapter describes a group of acoustic wave problems that are particularly suitable for study by means of schlieren visualization. Previously regarded mainly as a teaching demonstration technique, schlieren visualization in acoustics is shown to be a significant scientific tool, since stroboscopic schlieren observation determines the positions of whole acoustic wave fronts emanating from surfaces that involve complicated phenomena not easily probed by usual acoustic measurement techniques. Seventy-three figures add greatly to the value of this chapter.

Although engineering is a study entrenched firmly in belief of pragmatism, I have always believed its impact need not be limited to pragmatism. Pragmatism is not the boundaries that define engineering, just the (sometimes unforgiving) rules by which we sight our goals. This book studies two major problems of content-based video processing for a media-based technology: Video Object Plane (VOP) Extraction and Representation, in support of the MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 video standards, respectively. After reviewing relevant image and video processing techniques, we introduce the concept of Voronoi Ordered Spaces for both VOP extraction and representation to integrate shape information into low-level optimization algorithms and to derive robust shape descriptors, respectively. We implement a video object segmentation system with a novel surface optimization scheme that integrates Voronoi Ordered Spaces with existing techniques to balance visual information against predictions of models of a priori information.

Современное их положение охарактеризовано более кратко. Такое распределение материала вызвано двумя причинами.
