Interest in the Earth’s climate is at an all–time high, due in large part to concerns that it may be changing to a degree that will soon adversely affect the habitability of the planet. This realization coincides with rapid improvements inthe tools needed to study and understand the physical processes that produce and maintain the climate, including remote–sensing instruments and observing platforms in space, and fast computers and sophisticated algorithms to analyse large amounts of data and to run advanced theoretical models. The radiation that reaches the Earth from the Sun and its interaction with the Earth’s atmosphere plays a critical role in determining the climatic conditions that prevail over the globe. The Earth’s surface–radiation budget drives the water content of the atmosphere and with it the dominant component of the natural greenhouse effect that serves to maintain the benign climate on our planet. Variations in the incoming solar radiation and in the composition andcloud content of the atmosphere and ice cover of the surface result in climatic variability on timescales of billions of years to less than a century. Recently, human activity has begun to modify the Earth’s climate, through emissions of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane, and of aerosols, that alter the radiative balance and generally warm the planet, but can also cool it depending on the exact circumstances.

The Handbook of Pesticide Toxicology is a comprehensive, two-volume reference guide to the properties, effects, and regulation of pesticides that provides the latest and most complete information to researchers investigating the environmental, agricultural, veterinary, and human-health impacts of pesticide use. Written by international experts from academia, government, and the private sector, the Handbook of Pesticide Toxicology is an in-depth examination of critical issues related to the need for, use of, and nature of chemicals used in modern pest management. This updated third edition carries on the book's tradition of serving as the definitive reference on pesticide toxicology and recognizies the seminal contribution of Wayland J. Hayes, Jr., co-Editor of the first edition.

Hazardous and nonhazardous wastes must be grouped by their physical form, chemical content, degree of hazard to the environment, or source in order to be treated by waste managers. These groupings also allow environmental scientists to learn about the trends in our society's waste and in society itself. Waste types can change dramatically in a period of less than 100 years. For example, waste from electronic products poses a big problem in the world today but this was not considered a serious threat in the early 1900s. The waste treatment industry plays a role in removing, treating, and disposing of human, household, and industrial wastes, either by burning, decomposing, or chemically transforming them so that the Earth's activities can continue. Beginning with a look at the global waste problem, "Waste Treatment" defines the different classifications of materials that are treated today in waste management, including one of the most important concepts - waste stream. Waste streams are all the sources of various wastes as they move through the environment toward a final disposal. The control of waste streams is the central theme throughout this new, full-color book. Chapters of this title include: Assessing Global Waste Management; Electronic Products and Metals; Incineration; Vitrification; Solidification and Stabilization; Reduction and Compaction; and, Wastewater Treatment.

Environmental Toxicology is a welcome addition to the Cambridge University Press Environmental Chemistry Series. The inclusion of a textbook on toxicology in a series devoted to environmental chemistry might, at first glance, appear surprising. However, as will become evident to the reader, the authors have approached their topic in a truly interdisciplinary manner, with environmental chemistry playing a prominent role in their analysis. Environmental toxicology is a young and dynamic science, as pointed out by the authors in their welcome historical perspective of its development over the past 30+ years. One of the inevitable consequences of the rapid evolution of this area of science has been the scarcity of useful textbooks. Several multiauthored books have appeared in recent years, usually consisting of specialised chapters written by researchers familiar with a specific area of environmental toxicology.

The tundra, a land of ice and snow that is known through television documentaries and adventure novels, remains a mystery to the vast majority of people. The tundra regions of the world have the lowest density of human populations, with the possible exception of some deserts. It is the one biome that has resisted most attempts at agricultural exploitation and human settlement. It is therefore not surprising that many misconceptions about this ecosystem exist."Tundra" provides students with a detailed account of the physical aspects, such as climate, geology, and geography, and the biological aspects, including the adaptations of organisms to extreme conditions, of a tundra environment. The possible consequences of environmental change and increasing pollution in this remote and wild biome are addressed in order to appreciate the problems facing the tundra. Diagrams, full-color photographs and illustrations, and explanatory sidebars shed light on this vital ecosystem.

Maurice Schwartz, Editor of the much acclaimed Encyclopedia of Beaches and Coastal Environments (Hutchinson Ross, 1982) has now brought forth a new volume with a fresh interdisciplinary approach that includes geomorphology, ecology, engineering, technology, oceanography, and human activities as they relate to coasts. Within its covers the Encyclopedia of Coastal Science includes many aspects of the coastal sciences that are only to be found scattered among scientific literature.

The petroleum industry must minimize the environmental impact of its various operations. This extensively researched book assembles a tremendous amount of practical information to help reduce and control the environmental consequences of producing and processing petroleum and natural gas. The best way to treat pollution is not to create it in the first place. This book shows you how to plan and manage production activities to minimize and even eliminate some environmental problems without severely disrupting operations.
It focuses on ways to treat drilling and production wastes to reduce toxicity and/or volume before their ultimate disposal. You'll also find methods for safely transporting toxic materials from the upstream petroleum industry away from their release sites. For those sites already contaminated with petroleum wastes, this book reviews the remedial technologies available. Other topics include United States federal environmental regulations, sensitive habitats, major U.S. chemical waste exchanges, and offshore releases of oil. Environmental Control in Petroleum Engineering is essential for industry personnel with little or no training in environmental issues as well as petroleum engineering students.
