Hazardous and nonhazardous wastes must be grouped by their physical form, chemical content, degree of hazard to the environment, or source in order to be treated by waste managers. These groupings also allow environmental scientists to learn about the trends in our society's waste and in society itself. Waste types can change dramatically in a period of less than 100 years. For example, waste from electronic products poses a big problem in the world today but this was not considered a serious threat in the early 1900s. The waste treatment industry plays a role in removing, treating, and disposing of human, household, and industrial wastes, either by burning, decomposing, or chemically transforming them so that the Earth's activities can continue. Beginning with a look at the global waste problem, "Waste Treatment" defines the different classifications of materials that are treated today in waste management, including one of the most important concepts - waste stream. Waste streams are all the sources of various wastes as they move through the environment toward a final disposal. Environmental Toxicology is a welcome addition to the Cambridge University Press Environmental Chemistry Series. The inclusion of a textbook on toxicology in a series devoted to environmental chemistry might, at first glance, appear surprising. However, as will become evident to the reader, the authors have approached their topic in a truly interdisciplinary manner, with environmental chemistry playing a prominent role in their analysis. Environmental toxicology is a young and dynamic science, as pointed out by the authors in their welcome historical perspective of its development over the past 30+ years. One of the inevitable consequences of the rapid evolution of this area of science has been the scarcity of useful textbooks. Several multiauthored books have appeared in recent years, usually consisting of specialised chapters written by researchers familiar with a specific area of environmental toxicology. |

During the last two decades major changes have been taking place in worldwide coffee production. The most significant of these changes has been the massive increase in the quantities produced. ICO statistics show consistently increasing production levels particularly over the last 15 years reaching a record level of 120 million GO kg bags in 2002. Over the same period there has been a significant decrease in the average price paid for coffee on world markets which fell to USD cents 47 per pound in 2002 compared to 120 cents in the 1980s. The basic cause of the decline in coffee prices has been one of oversupply with the increase in coffee production in recent years outstripping demand by several percentage points. There has been a steady accumulation of large stocks of coffee, particularly in importing countries, which have put additional downward pressure on coffee prices. Thus in recent times many coffee producing countries have seen a catastrophic decline in export earnings despite increasing production, and the incomes of many coffee farmers have been reduced to the point at which they are struggling to survive. The impact on the finances of millions of small farmers in lesser developed countries has reached crisis proportions. |

Endotoxins are potentially toxic compounds produced by Gram-negative bacteria including some pathogens. Unlike exotoxins, which are secreted in soluble form by live bacteria, endotoxins are comprised of structural components of bacteria. Endotoxins can cause a whole-body inflammatory state, sepsis, leading to low blood pressure, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and death. This book brings together contributions from researchers in the forefront of these subjects. It is divided into two sections. The first deals with how endotoxins are synthesized and end up on the bacterial surface. The second discussed how endotoxins activate TLR4 and, in turn, how TLR4 generates the molecular signals leading to infectious and inflammatory diseases. The way endotoxins interact with the host cells is fundamental to understanding the mechanism of sepsis, and recent research on these aspects of endotoxins has served to illuminate previously undescribed functions of the innate immune system.
