It is now over ten years since we edited the first edition of HLA-B27 in the Development of Spondyloarthropathies (SpA). It is obvious that over this period an enormous amount of information concerning SpA and HLA-B27 has accumulated, and this has been reflected in the knowledge of molecular mechanism of the spondyloarthropathies. Discussion for such a book took initial form at the outstanding 4th Gent Symposium on SpA in October 2006, but was not formally commissioned by Landes Bioscience until early 2007. Molecular Mechanisms of Spondyloarthropathies aims to synthesize this growing knowledge and present all the current studies concerning the basic research of SpA.
Over the last decade, enormous progress has been made in the understanding of the molecular and cellular processes that lead to disease pathology. Recognition of the pathways involved in the pathogenic mechanisms of disease and the potential to target specific immune effector functions have opened the door to a wide range of innovative treatment opportunities for the SpA. Thus, we believe that the understanding of the specific molecular mechanisms involved would help to design highly specific drugs in the future. The contributors are among the best in their field and reflect the state of the art of research and current opinion of rheumatologists and immunologists. |

Vertebrate Palaeontology is a basic textbook on vertebrate paleontology by Michael J. Benton, published by the Blackwell's. It has so far appeared in three editions, published in 1990, 1997, and 2005. It is designed for paleontology graduate courses in biology and geology as well as for the interested layman.
The book gives an overall account of every major group of living and fossil vertebrate. At the rear of the book is a phylogenetic classification which combines both the Linnaean hierarchy and the cladistic arrangement, and has been used as a guideline for the Wikipedia pages on living and extinct vertebate taxa. However, some of Benton's classification differs from that in the Tree of Life Web Project, especially as regards the relationship of early amphibian groups (Batrachomorpha and Reptiliomorpha). |

Economist Nicholas Stern famously described climate change as ‘the greatest market failure the world has seen’. But there is an exception: the attempts of the world’s governments to redress that market failure, beginning with the Climate Convention’s Kyoto Protocol. Far from overcoming the market failure identified by Stern, the Kyoto Protocol has created a whole new spectrum of market failures – like Hans Christian Andersen’s demonic distorting mirror when it was smashed to smithereens. First among the Protocol’s failures is that its key objective – to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – is unmet, as reported by Michael Raupach in 2007.3 Indeed, the rate of increase of global CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels and from industry has accelerated, from 1.1 per cent per year for 1990–99 to more than 3 per cent per year for 2000–04. The emissions growth rate since 2000, as Raupach writes, ‘was greater than for the most fossil-fuel intensive of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emissions scenarios developed in the late 1990s’. |

The Dictyostelia are soil amoebae capable of extraordinary feats of survival, motility, chemotaxis, and development. Known as the "social amoebae," these organisms have been the subjects of serious study since the 1930s. Research in this area has been instrumental in shaping general views of differentiation, morphogenesis, and communication. Beginning with the history of Dictyostelids, this book considers the problems of the evolution of this multicellular organism.
