Birds treats 166 families and 316 species from around the world. Entries are arranged by taxonomy. Order entries offer an overview of a group of families, and family entries provide an overview of a particular family. The family entries are followed by one or more species accounts, which include the same information, in addition to a map indicating range and a photograph or illustration for each species. Conservation is emphasized, and the set makes use of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, now the World Conservation Union) Red List categories for each species. Each entry concludes with a list of books, periodicals, and Web sites (including a note of the date when they were last accessed) for further research. There are more than 500 colorful photographs, illustrations, and charts. Sidebars provide supplemental information. Layout is open and appealing, and the writing is clear and easily understood.

When westerners first visited the home of the panda we were at the primitive stage of shooting or grabbing them. Understandably, we were banned from the locality, and gradually we learned to value and appreciate pandas. Since then they have received adoration a-plenty, but their natural history was almost completely unstudied and there seemed a considerable danger that they might be lost forever. Now, at last, they are starting to get the serious attention they deserve. Chinese and western scientists are working together to investigate the ecology of the giant panda, its life in the wild and its natural behaviour. These are vital steps in devising a programme for its conservation, a programme in which captive pandas may play an important part as a sort of backstop against the extinction of this rare and extraordinary animal. For the pressure is still on the wild panda: predators, the disappearance of bamboo from large areas, and the burgeoning human population of the Far East all work against them. The Chinese authorities, however, have made an outstanding commitment to the preservation of the pandas, have already protected vast areas, and are fighting the threat of panda food shortages. The future now begins to look hopeful and there is a good chance that the world will salvage one of its most exotic and enigmatic natural treasures: Ailuropoda melanoleuca, the fabulous giant panda.
