The more than 2,100 entries include, according to the publisher, some 1,000 biographical entries and "more than 450 new articles." Biographical entries range from less than a page (Francesco Bonatelli, Cheng Hao) to more than 20 pages (Aristotle, John Locke, Bertrand Russell). The 10 separately authored overviews under Chinese philosophy (Buddhism, Confucianism, etc.) together run 90 pages. Gene Blocker's merely 8-page Japanese philosophy justifies in part its relative briefness with this opening: "The first, and perhaps the most interesting, question regarding Japanese philosophy is whether there is such a thing." Other solid overviews include Human Genome Project, Medical ethics, Neuroscience, and Philosophy of chemistry. The combined articles on the history and varieties of logic are a small book, concluding with a 27-page glossary of logical terms. Lengthy articles such as Computability theory, Infinity in mathematics and logic, and Information theory, laden with logical and mathematical symbols, will perhaps be beyond the grasp of the average undergraduate philosophy major; such articles are by far the exception, and most will be comprehensible to the informed general reader. Volume 10 opens with 13 articles that missed the deadlines for being included in volumes 1 through 9. These are followed by a thematic outline of contents; extensive bibliographies, in many languages, of philosophy dictionaries and encyclopedias, journals, and bibliographies published since 1965; and a 545-page index.

Psychoanalysis is over 100 years old. Over the course of the 20th century, many new terms
and concepts have been added to Freud's original constructs. This evolution has occurred
not just in Vienna, Berlin, or Europe, but rather, all over the world. Consequently, new
ideas have been formulated throughout and across the increasingly far-flung psychoanalytic
community, and despite the existence of an international organization with a rich scientific
program, regularly published journals, and an abundance of meetings and exchanges,
the language of psychoanalysis is not as uniform as one would expect. Some concepts are
understood differently and more importantly, have varying implications in different parts
of the world. Other ideas are highly developed and given special status in some countries,
while they are unknown or rarely utilized in others. To complicate matters further, schools
of thought have developed with variant degrees of deviation from Freud's metapsychology.

Grade 8 Up–These 250 signed entries offer solid scientific and historical background, thorough descriptions, and, often, specific recent examples. Beyond the expected subject areas, coverage includes less obvious topics, such as "Information, Access to," that affect pollution in significant ways. Article length varies from one or two paragraphs on a specific topic such as the air pollution disaster at Donora, PA, to fairly comprehensive overviews. For example, a nine-page entry on "Lifestyle" examines the connection between pollution and a consumer lifestyle and "eco-apartheid," the costs of material growth paid by the urban poor. The clear writing is formal in tone; the vocabulary is fairly sophisticated. Statistical information is easy to access from within the narrative and from charts and tables. Valuable historical perspective combines with current information on timely articles such as "Arctic National Wildlife Refuge," which mentions the defeated 2002 legislation regarding oil exploration. Though there is an erroneous reference to "the first Bush administration" with regard to the 2001 opposition of the Kyoto Protocol, facts and dates are accurate. Bibliographies for each article include print and/or Internet sources. Cross-references encourage readers to investigate the relationships among topics. A useful "Topical Outline" groups articles into more than 30 broad categories. Wide margins; orange headings; and scattered color photos, charts, and diagrams make for an attractive layout. Reference works on general environmental areas are available, but many collections will benefit from this focused set that covers a timely topic in a thorough and accessible manner.
