The purpose of Psychologists and Their Theories
for Students is to provide readers with in-depth information
on major psychological theories, past and
present, as well as the people who developed them.
Psychologists explains each psychologist's theories in
detail, then analyzes the historical context and critical
reaction to the theories. Biographical information is
also included. Psychologists is designed to meet the
needs of high school and college students in the first
two years of study.
Psychologists contains entries on 20 of the most
frequently studied or most pertinent psychologists in
history. Each entry is accompanied by sidebars
containing information on related theories or other
psychologists who were close to the subject of the
entry, either through proximity or ideology. Photos
and charts are included. Entries follow a standard
structure and include a personal chronology, list of the
subject's principal publications, sources, and bibliographic
information on materials for a student's
further exploration of the subject. The entries are
accompanied by a historical overview of the science
of psychology, chronology, glossary of terms used in
the book, and a general index.

Grade 9 Up–A no-nonsense, comprehensive encyclopedia that will be of use to students researching health and food-science topics. The set examines a variety of subjects such as "Antioxidants," "Appetite," "Fats," "Malnutrition," "Soy," and "Organic Foods." The food pyramid is clearly explained and food labels are deciphered line by line. Related topics include diseases that are associated with nutrition, such as osteoporosis and rickets, and health organizations. A global perspective is maintained throughout the work, with articles provided on the diets of geographic and ethnic groups worldwide. The authoritative entries are concise, if a little dry. Nutrition terminology is defined in the margins and included in the glossary. Average-quality, black-and-white photographs lend only slight visual appeal, but generally add information. Frequent graphs, tables, and sidebars supplement the text with more specific or esoteric material. The index has occasional lapses. The more appealing Encyclopedia of Foods (Academic, 2001) takes a less-clinical approach to its topic; it has color photos and contains practical advice on meal planning and preparation. Nutrition's straightforward coverage offers more information on disease and government oversight.

Grade 6-9–From concept to copyediting, this unwieldy survey of applied mathematics falls short in nearly every aspect. Each of the 80 alphabetically arranged chapters, from Addition to Zero-Sum Games, takes on a curriculum-centered topic. They open with a definition, close with a brief list of further sources, and in between quickly lay out fundamental terms and ideas, historical background, and descriptions of Real-life Applications. The latter often include word (rarely number) examples, but also tend to be nonspecific, if not outright simplistic; online purchasing over a secure connection is safe, for instance, because hackers can't decode the content even if they somehow manage to intercept the message somehow. Under Algebra, the entry on making tradeoffs between lifespan and voltage when Buying Light Bulbs assumes that small variations in voltage are an option. In addition, despite substantial duplication of topics, there are no see references to connect related entries, such as those for carbon dating or sports wagering. Printed in two large volumes of dense, double-columned, seldom-illustrated text, this is less likely than the textbooks that it is supposed to compliment [sic], or actual workbooks such as Terry Cooper's Real Life Math (Scholastic, 2002), to attract or change the attitudes of reluctant students.

Islam dominates the news these days-be it a story on Shia uprisings in Iraq, banning headscarves in French schools or prosecuting extremists involved in the Sept. 11 attacks-yet few Americans are familiar with the religion's complex history. Author Ruthven, along with Muslim scholar Nanji, present a rich but accessible history of Islam, now the religion of one-fifth of the world's population, from Mohammed to bin Laden. Brief, digestible essays create an illuminating picture of the pivotal moments and movements, like the colonization of the Muslim world and recent rise of Islamist terrorists, which are complemented by numerous color illustrations mapping the religion's spread from ancient Arabia to its outer limits in today's Africa and Southeast Asia. While this is not an infallible resource (the authors misidentify the location of Djenne's enormous mud mosque; it is in Mali, not Niger), it is certainly a most helpful one. Color maps and photographs throughout.

Over the last two decades the historical focus has shifted from viewing events in a simple historical context to a more integrative perspective. This set offers a multidimensional picture of primarily Western civilization, covering Ancient Egypt (2675-332 B.C.E.), Ancient Greece and Rome (1200 B.C.E.-476 C.E.), Medieval Europe (814-1450 C.E.), Renaissance Europe (1300-1600 C.E.), and The Age of the Baroque and Enlightenment (1600-1800 C.E.). Similar in organization to Gale's American Eras and World Eras lines, the work exposes readers to each historical period through the study of nine different arts and humanities topics: "Architecture and Design," "Dance," "Fashion," "Literature," "Music," "Philosophy," "Religion," "Theater," and "Visual Arts." Each topic area is treated in a different chapter, but the connections between topics are highlighted both in the text and through cross-referencing. The result is a broader and more inclusive picture of the culture of each period, emphasizing connections between, for example, religion, dance, and literature or between the visual arts and architecture.
Each chapter is structured in the same way, containing a chronology; an overview of the development of the field under scrutiny; a "Topics" section, which discusses various movements, schools of thought, and masterworks that characterize the discipline during that era; a handful of biographies of significant people; and a list of documentary sources. Each of the subsections within "Topics" includes a list of sources. The writing, produced by subject experts, is uniformly clear and informative but quite pedantic. It is certainly not leisure--interest reading but does impart information in an admirably direct style.
Sidebars offer primary source material (letters, poems, essays, songs, epitaphs, etc.). Numerous black-and-white photographs, maps, and reproductions extend the text well. Technical terms and definitions appear both in the text and in the glossary, and lists of works for further reference, as well as media and online sources, are listed at the back of each volume. Although there is not a cumulative index, each volume does have its own accurate index. Aimed at college and university students with or without historical background, this set provides a solid picture of western European history through the arts.
