This encyclopedia set, part of the Macmillan Science Library series, is designed to accommodate middle-school students through college undergraduates. The work contains approximately 300 signed entries on a variety of topics relating to animal science, including animal development, functions, behavior, ecology, and evolution. The connection between animals and humans is also explored in entries such as Animal testing, Apiculture, and Domestic animals. Also included are biographies of noted scientists who have made "significant contributions" to the field (for example, Henry Walter Bates, Rachel Carson, Gregor Mendel) as well as introductions to career opportunities in the related disciplines. Articles appear in alphabetical order and range in length from several paragraphs to several pages. All are accompanied by see also references and further reading suggestions (including Web sites). The World Geographical Encyclopedia - Geo-Data
Автор: John McCoy
Издательство: Gale
Год издания: 2002

Количество страниц: 713
Язык: english
Формат: DJVU

The first new edition since 1989 of Geo-Data, formerly edited by George Kurian, is a splendid example of what a reference book can be. Its purpose is to provide the reader with the most detailed and comprehensive description available of the physical geography of the countries of the world. It achieves this purpose in an easy-to-use alphabetical arrangement for all of the world's 207 countries and dependencies. Each entry begins with the key facts about that country including longest rivers and highest mountains and other key statistics. All place-names and geographical features such as mountains and lakes have been listed in the most easily recognized versions of their names. Entries adhere to the same basic structure with key facts followed by overall geography and geology; then mountains and hills; inland waterways, coasts and oceans; climate and vegetation; human population; natural resources; and finally further readings. This information is enhanced by a relief map of the country that is both clear and easy to read. Additional features of the volume include an extensive index plus 19 tables of world rankings and a glossary. The glossary is perhaps the weakest feature, as it could have been more extensive. Other geographical dictionaries such as The Columbia Gazetteer of the World (Columbia Univ., 1998) and Merriam Webster's Geographical Dictionary (1997) define place-names in one A-Z listing. Geo-Data 's arrangement lends itself to readers who want to take a country-by-country approach. This is an excellent reference book that will be valuable for high schools and public libraries as well as academic reference collections. Highly recommended.

The Encyclopedia of Airbrushing Techniques
Автор: Michael E. Leek
Издательство: Search Press
Год издания: 2001
isbn: 0855329866
Количество страниц: 91
Язык: english
Формат: PDF

The first half of Michael E. Leek's Encyclopedia of Airbrush Techniques is devoted to technique and real-world examples of how techniques are used. The second half illustrates themes of professional work, and how they exemplify various techniques and design concepts. To a total beginner, this book is filled with detailed steps and explanations, but does not qualify as a first how-to book. The examples and pictures describe brush technique well enough, but do little to enlighten how and where the masking is applied and removed. The photos range from simple to enticing, and are a good basis for practice ideas and experimenting with the airbrush. To an intermediate airbrush artist, the techniques are a good example of method, and may help round out a repertoire of skills. Vivid selections of advanced professional airbrush work cry out for a more advanced book of technique combinations.

A celebrity. The first edition--13 volumes published 1972-75, and cited in Books for College Libraries 3rd ed., Guide to Reference Books, Public Library Catalog, Walford's--is surely the most widely available reference on the animal kingdom (humans are granted ten pages). Now in 17 volumes, the entire text has been rewritten by English-speaking scientists, avoiding the occasional infelicities found in the first edition. Gale, using the abundant Thomson resources, cooperated with the American Zoo and Aquarium Association in the revision and enlargement. Each of the following is available separately: v.1. Lower metazoans & lesser deuterosomes. v.2. Protostomes. 3. Insects. 4-5. Fishes. 6. Amphibians. 7. Reptiles. 8--11. Birds. 12--16. Mammals. T.McKimmie of New Mexico State U. reviewed the birds volume for CHOICE (7/03). see that review for more detail and its conclusion: "Essential. Academic and public libraries." The first edition did, in fact, find a receptive audience ranging from elementary school through research libraries. The new Grzimek (pronounced CHIM-eck) contains some: 3,000 color photos, 3,500 maps, and 5,500 color illustrations. Encompasses evolution & systematics. reproduction, development and life history. ecology. symbiosis. behavior. importance to humans. and conservation. Individual articles run from 1,250 to 7,500 words. A top reference for 2004, and probably for the decade.

The Encyclopedia of Science and Religion reflects the breathtaking scope and pluralistic character of this ongoing dialogue. It is the most comprehensive work of its kind, and it is designed to be accessible to a wide readership from high school students to independent researchers and academics. Anyone fascinated by the ever-evolving impact of the sciences on religious belief in a global context will find the Encyclopedia a rich resource, for the historical relationship between science and religion certainly ranges from harmony and mutual support to stormy periods of intense conflict.
