The first edition (2001) of this resource was favorably reviewed, and it has now been extensively expanded and updated. The bulk of the work comprises 350 alphabetically arranged entries covering terms, biographies, events, documents, diplomatic agreements, organizations, crimes, and depictions in television and film. The articles average 2 pages but are larger as needed, such as 6 pages on Sexual violence. Many entries are naturally on aspects of the two world wars. Enough historical background is provided for context. Among the new articles are Arab-Israeli Wars, Peacekeeping missions, and Spandau Prison.
The time period is from the Bronze Age through the December 2005 report on the Beslan School takeover by Chechen separatists and Senator McCain's amendment on torture in the 2006 Pentagon Appropriations Bill. Entries on topics of current interest such as Abu Ghraib Prison and Guantanamo Bay Detention Center include information from 2005. Black-and-white illustrations, such as a print of Swedish prisoners constructing St. Petersburg in 1721, frequently enhance the entries, At the end of most entries are see alsoreferences and lists of diverse sources of information, for example, a 1919 study or a 1944 article in a British medical journal. The articles are signed. Although there are separate encyclopedias on prisoners in particular wars, this unique resource will enable a wide range of users to learn about specific events and comprehend the horrors of human history. It will be useful in public and academic libraries.
