In more than 2,600 articles, this encyclopedia covers the breadth of Asia, largely during the 20th century, from Turkey to Southeast Asia... Articles about countries typically include an overall profile (geography, the people, language, history, politics, economy) and more focused topical articles (economic system, education system, history, political system), giving readers the option of a summary approach or more detailed coverage. Many other topics appear by subject, with separate articles by country or region (e.g., Literature-Central Asia, Literature-China). Given the varying ways in which topics are presented, effective use of the encyclopedia is greatly enhanced by a lengthy Reader's Guide, repeated in each volume, and a subject index. Typical of good encyclopedias, all the articles are signed (the preface notes the participation of more than eight hundred scholars and experts from around the world), include references to related articles, and conclude with Further Reading bibliographies. Other features include nearly 1,400 black-and-white maps (a section of regional maps is repeated in each volume), photographs, tables, chronologies, sidebars (many quoting source documents), and a roster of contributors... Articles vary in depth, with many too superficial for more than quick reference or undergraduate background information. Nevertheless, the encyclopedia will be a unique resource appropriate for most reference collections. Summing Up: Essential. General and academic collections. |

Since the 1929 publication of the French journal Annales, social history has gradually become a dominant area of investigation. The social history "paradigm" emphasizes an eclectic study of social processes, popular culture, period "mentalities," revealed where possible by quantitative methodology. Well-known authors, such as Ferdnand Braudel (The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip II, 1972) and E.P. Thompson (The Making of the English Working Class, 1963), have now given way to a bewildering complex of subjects, style, method, and period. The great value of this encyclopedia is to consolidate much of this work in some 209 articles organized in 23 sections. The style is generally clear, and the content is comprehensive. The European emphasis reflects the interests and work of scholars who have produced much social history. Some readers may find the balance of the work somewhat curious, e.g., "Catholicism" in the "Religion" section receives about as much attention as "Animals and Pets" in the "Everyday Life" section. Omissions can also be odd, as in the biography section, which includes Tolstoy but not Dostoyevsky and Mozart but not Beethoven. Finally, maps are not adequate to the needs of the articles, but the illustrations are extensive. Despite these drawbacks, this is a very useful reference. The section on methodology makes an excellent, if indirect, case for social history itself, and overall the treatment of conceptual subjects such as regionalism, periodization, and urbanization will be of particular use to students. Most authors are solidly established scholars, and some, like Charles and Louise Tilly, Emil Niederhauser, and Jeremy Black, are exceptionally prolific. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries. |

We live in a multicultural world, and professionals from a variety of fields are faced with challenges brought by differences that are in some cases only recently recognized or accommodated. The Encyclopedia of Multicultural Psychology is a welcome addition to the literature that attempts to define these differences. According to its introduction, this volume, the work of almost 200 academic contributors, is intended for "laypersons, students, and professionals new to the field with an interest in the role of culture in psychology."
Among the A-Z entries are articles for ethnic groups, for example, Alaska natives, Cuban Americans, and Vietnamese Americans . Each of these articles gives background for the group, a history of its immigration, information about acculturation, and more. Major areas of concern, such as Depression, Posttraumatic stress disorder, and Stress are defined and discussed in general, and then with respect to various groups. Topics such as Bilingual education, Intelligence tests, Racism and discrimination, Religion , and Transracial adoption are discussed with an emphasis on the differences that culture brings to these issues. Series of entries cover culture-specific syndromes, indigenous healing, and religious and spiritual beliefs.
The articles are for the most part at least one page in length. Many are much longer, and most include bibliographies. There is good use of see also references. An alphabetical list of articles and a thematic guide can be found at the beginning of the volume. The index is sufficiently detailed.

Gr 10 Up-From Afghans to Zulus, and from the Spartans and Knights Templar to the Green Berets and the Flying Circus, this volume covers all of the basics on most of the fearsome fighting groups throughout history. They are listed alphabetically by their official name, but if readers don't know that Napoleon's army was called the Grande Arm e, they can find a reference to it under Napoleon in the index. The articles are short (usually one to two pages), and many include a black-and-white reproduction, photo, or map. Some of the pictures are a bit hazy. Each article ends with a brief selection of references. The index includes particular battles as well as individual leaders. The absence of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot seems a bit striking, but otherwise, this is a good reference book that will also be popular with browsers. |

The first edition (2001) of this resource was favorably reviewed, and it has now been extensively expanded and updated. The bulk of the work comprises 350 alphabetically arranged entries covering terms, biographies, events, documents, diplomatic agreements, organizations, crimes, and depictions in television and film. The articles average 2 pages but are larger as needed, such as 6 pages on Sexual violence. Many entries are naturally on aspects of the two world wars. Enough historical background is provided for context. Among the new articles are Arab-Israeli Wars, Peacekeeping missions, and Spandau Prison.
The time period is from the Bronze Age through the December 2005 report on the Beslan School takeover by Chechen separatists and Senator McCain's amendment on torture in the 2006 Pentagon Appropriations Bill. Entries on topics of current interest such as Abu Ghraib Prison and Guantanamo Bay Detention Center include information from 2005. Black-and-white illustrations, such as a print of Swedish prisoners constructing St. Petersburg in 1721, frequently enhance the entries, At the end of most entries are see alsoreferences and lists of diverse sources of information, for example, a 1919 study or a 1944 article in a British medical journal. The articles are signed. Although there are separate encyclopedias on prisoners in particular wars, this unique resource will enable a wide range of users to learn about specific events and comprehend the horrors of human history. It will be useful in public and academic libraries.

The antitobacco litigation of the 1990s, culminating in the $206 billion Master Settlement Agreement, led to a lull during which this encyclopedia could be produced without fear of its being immediately overtaken by events. The editor has used the opportunity to good advantage. Tobacco in History and Culture contains 136 articles addressing every important aspect of the tobacco phenomenon and the controversies spawned by the revelations of the past several decades, most notably those relating to health risks and to the tobacco companies' awareness of those risks, long before the public was made aware of them. At this point, with the companies concentrating on foreign markets, this work will become outdated only in regard to the inevitable upward revisions of projected tobacco-related deaths in those markets-which include underdeveloped countries, where medical facilities are least capable of dealing with the results of tobacco use.
Entry length ranges from just over a page for Black Patch War (an early-twentieth-century conflict between Kentucky tobacco growers and the American Tobacco Company) and Opium to more than 10 pages for Disease and mortality and prohibitions. Each entry concludes with a bibliography, and numerous terms are defined in page margins. Other features of the set include 250 well-chosen and well-reproduced black-and-white illustrations and, in both volumes, a section of color plates. Sidebars contribute additional facts and perspective.

Population means more than people, births, and deaths. Population studies measure how people live, the environment they live in, and the resources to support life. The 336 articles in the Encyclopedia of Population discuss topics as varied as Divorce, Immigration, Land use, and Prehistoric populations. A topical outline provides a thematic view of the encyclopedia's content, which ranges from population theory to the cultural and political aspects of population.
Each entry is 500 to 1,000 words in length, contains a bibliography, and is signed by one of 278 authors - all published scholars from around the world. Among the longer entries are Climate change and population; Diseases, infectious; and Sexuality in humans. As is expected within the field of population, many charts, tables, and graphs accompany the text, including several in an appendix. Biographical entries on 60 individuals whose work was important in the development of population studies - for example, Thomas Malthus, Karl Marx, and Margaret Sanger - are included. Finding aids include an alphabetical list of articles, see and see also references, and an extensive index.
