Each year, about 15,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported in the United States, making it our number one vector-borne, or animal carried, disease. Surprisingly, Lyme disease was not listed as an official disease category by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) until 1982. The public is still unaware of many of the aspects of Lyme disease e.g., its symptoms, its cause, its method of transmission (is it contagious ?). However, there are many aspects of Lyme disease that are known. For example, we know that a certain type of tick spreads the disease, and that Lyme disease is actually caused by bacteria. There is a vaccine, but it is not presently available. More research needs to be done on the interaction of the animals involved in the pathogenesis of the disease, assessing the role of the environment, and determining the effectiveness of different preventive measures

Biomedical Research Reports is introduced at a time of unprecedented advances and public interest in medical research. Our intention is to provide the reader with an in-depth analysis of subjects of interest to the biomedical researcher from the broad perspective of multiple authors, each covering a particular facet of the subject. We intentionally have chosen a broad scope for this new series to maximize flexibility in the range of topics that will be reviewed. The word Ebola conjures up horrific images of sickness and death. Movies and television shows have dramatized the deadly results of infection with the virus (Figure 1.1). In fact, the Ebola virus has become synonymous with a gruesome death. Major depression was meticulously described by Hippocrates nearly 2500 years ago. Melancholia, a subtype of depression, is the only word which was coined by Hippocrates based on his theory of the four humors (melancholia: black bile), and that is still used today to describe a disorder that is part of contemporary official diagnostic systems. Much has changed in psychopharmacology since the publication of the first edition of Essential Psychopharmacology four years ago. This second edition attempts to reflect the advances in neuroscience, in the understanding of psychiatric disorders, and in the dozens of new medications for psychiatric disorders that have dramatically advanced the field of psychopharmacology in this brief period of time. Thus, two chapters have been added, 11 of the 12 earlier chapters have been extensively revised, and the length of the written text has been increased by about 50%. What has not changed is the didactic style of the first edition, which continues in this edition and is largely based on updated lectures, slides, and articles of the author. Thus, new materials are presented, with an emphasis on color pictures, which have more than doubled in this edition to over 500 in total.
