The entire book, with the exception of the section on High-Yield Facts, is based on questions and answers. Most of the items in this book are based on recall of facts rather than application of basic science knowledge or problem solving. There are also a number of X-type (simple true/false), C-type (A, B, or Both/Neither) and negative A-type (all of the following EXCEPT) items. These items are not representative of questions encountered on NBME Subject Examinations and the current USMLE Step examinations. Many of the items would be significantly improved if they were rewritten as short experimental or clinical vignettes. These vignettes could emphasize and test the student's ability to solve problems by applying basic science principles. The two chapters that are particularly strong in content and quality are "Nervous System and Neoplasia" and "Blood Disorders."
