Data derived from this new discipline, once considered to be of research interest only, have revolutionized the evaluation of hematolymphoid neoplasms and are now being applied, to a lesser extent, to the assessment of mesenchymal and epithelial tumors. While immunohistochemistry has been available for almost 30 years, it has not remained static. New antibodies are constantly being developed that expand our diagnostic and prognostic capabilities.
Although these new technologies are exciting, they only supplement and do not replace the ‘‘H&E slide,’’ which is, and will continue to be, the foundation of surgical pathology and this book particularly. This edition has been revised to incorporate some of these new technologies that further our understanding of the pathobiology of disease and improve our diagnostic acumen, while at the same time retaining clinical and pathological features that are not new but remain useful and important. |

During the last few decades, as the management of meniscal trauma has evolved, and knowledge gained on meniscal function, the orthopaedic surgeon has attempted to preserve the meniscus whenever possible. Arthroscopic meniscal repair has become the treatment of choice when the tear is located in the peripheral rim. Partial meniscectomy has become limited to such an extent that the deleterious effect of total meniscectomy is avoided. Meniscal allograft replacement, which has been available for the last two decades, is used when the patient is confronted with a painful total meniscectomy. Future research and experiments may suggest that partial meniscal replacement might be indicated in the presence of a painful knee compartment after failed meniscal repair or partial meniscectomy. |

Imaging of the temporal bone has recently been advanced with multidetector CT and high-field MR imaging to the point where radiologists and clinicians must familiarize themselves with anatomy that was previously not resolvable on older generation scanners. Most anatomic reference texts rely on photomicrographs of gross temporal bone dissections and low-power microtomed histological sections to identify clinically relevant anatomy. By contrast, this unique temporal bone atlas uses state of the art imaging technology to display middle and inner ear anatomy in multiplanar two- and three-dimensional formats. In addition to in vivo imaging with standard multidetector CT and 3-T MR, the authors have employed CT and MR microscopy techniques to image temporal bone specimens ex vivo, providing anatomic detail not yet attainable in a clinical imaging practice. Also included is a CD that allows the user to scroll through the CT and MR microscopy datasets in three orthogonal planes of section. |
