The Austrian artillery of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars was a creation of the renowned Lichtenstein system of the early 1750s. This weight system produced a series of weapons of 3-, 6- and 12-pdr. calibre along with 7- and 10-pdr. howitzers. In the 1780s they were joined by Cavalry artillery guns with their Wurst seats. In 1811 Austria also began the establishment of rocket troops based upon the British invention, whilst their heavy and siege pieces remained the 12 -,18- and 24-pdrs throughout the period. This book describes the system as well as its operational use during the Napoleonic Wars.

By the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 Britain was the undisputed master of the seas owing to the power and strength of the Royal Navy. Its fleets, comprising ships of the line, frigates, and gunboats, had doubled in size since the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars in 1793, totaling almost a thousand capital vessels. This book examines the commanders, men, and ships of the Royal Navy during the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars, and discusses the Navy's command structure (from the Admiralty down to ship level) and its organization at sea. The tactics employed in action by a fleet, a squadron, and individual ships are also discussed, as are the medical services available, providing a fascinating insight into the navy that ruled the waves.

The great warleaders and generals, including Darius, Alexander the Great, Hannibal and Julius Caesar successfully used siegecraft to gain their objectives. As siege tactics became integral to success in war, generals employed the minds of engineers and scientists to develop tactics, and offensive and defensive technology to give them the edge over their enemies. The mathematician Archimedes was famously and very practically involved in the defense of Syracuse in 213-12 BC. Soldiers became highly skilled combat engineers. The book tracks the amazing developments in siege warfare through a period of nine centuries and includes details of the evolution of the artillery of the era - spear- and stone-firing catapults. Full-color artwork, many drawings and plans, photographs of archeological finds and reconstructions support expert but accessible text in this fascinating study of a less familiar facet of the ancient art of war.

Home of the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW), Seymour Johnson is a key base in the USAF's East Coast defensive network. Since the F-15E Strike Eagle was briefly in "Superbase 12: Edwards", this new strike fighter has gone on to see operational service during Desert Storm flying with the 4th TFW. Currently transitioning onto the F-15E from the classic F-4E Phantom II, the 4th TFW are shown during this historical phase. As a result of this, the author has managed to capture the Air Force of the 1970s and early 1980s in the same book as the USAF of the 1990s and beyond. As an added bonus, Strategic Air Command also operate a large wing of KC-10 Extender refuellers from Seymour Johnson in support of 4th TFW assets. This base also has the distinction of being the largest facility in North Carolina. The Osprey Superbase series takes the enthusiast behind the scenes on the world's major air bases. This series features spectacular, exclusive colour photography from aviation's top photographers. Each title begins with a 3-4 page narrative introduction to the history and missions performed by the base, followed by a series of photo essays on various aspects of the overall topic. All the photographs are in colour.

The Roman Legions were the most highly organized troops of the ancient world, but the process of turning the Legions from what was essentially a part-time citizen militia into the professional force that first made Rome the dominant power in the Mediterranean and then built an empire that stretched across the known world, was no small feat Focusing on the organizational changes in the Roman Army during the Civil Wars, Nic Fields examines the role played by Caius Marius and his far-reaching reforms, which included having professional volunteers from the lowest social class enter the army in search of the possibility of plunder. He goes on to examine the consequences of encouraging these soldiers to follow their commanders without question, which broke the allegiance of the army to the Roman state, a trend that gave rise to militarily ambitious men such as Sulla, Pompeius, Caesar, Antonius, and Octavian. With the nuts and bolts detail that readers demand from the Battle Orders series, this is an intriguing description of how the Roman army grew, modernized, rebelled and finally helped build an empire, complete with full organizational charts, photographs and detailed maps.

From the Introduction: It all started back in 1961, when three NATO fighter squadrons assembled at RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk and hosted what became known as 'Tiger Meet'. The year before, aircrew of the 79th Tactical Fighter Squadron, US Air Force at Woodbridge suggested the idea of creating an informal fraternity of NATO fighter units which had tigers as part of their official badges. The 79th TFS already enjoyed a close association with No 74 Sqn of the Royal Air force at nearby RAF Coltishall, and links were quickly established with Escadre de Chasse 1/12 of L'Armée de L'Air based at Cambrai. The main objectives of the Tiger Meet were to encourage professional relationships between NATO Squadrons and foster solidarity within the air forces of the alliance. Thirty years on, NATO is still very much in business; all of the original tiger squadrons remain operational, their number swollen by many new units, including some from outside Europe. Whenever possible tiger squadrons come together as a team, discuss their varied operational roles and continue the spirit of friendship.

The War of 1812 (or the American War as it is known in Britain) has the strange distinction of being a war largely forgotten by both of its main participants. Despite being overshadowed by the Napoleonic Wars raging in Europe, the War of 1812 saw Americans, British, Canadians, and Native Americans wage an increasing brutal conflict all along the border. By 1814, with war coming to a close in Europe, the Americans decided to launch one last, major land offensive in an attempt to seize Canada. Although previous attempts had most often ended in disaster, the American army of 1814 contained several highly trained units under competent leadership including the legendary Winfield Scott. This final Niagara campaign saw a number of pitched battles including Chippawa, Lundy's Lane, and Cook's Mill, where the American Bluecoats matched the British shot for shot. However, due to poor planning at the highest levels of American office, the campaign was ultimately a failure and the result ensured the survival of Canada as an independent state. A critically-acclaimed researcher on the War of 1812, author John Latimer presents a new look at an oft-forgotten yet crucially important campaign in the history of North America.

From the Introduction: Many veterans of the Korean War may sometimes wonder why so much sympathy and attention is lavished on those who lost in Vietnam, when so little is given to those who successfully preserved the integrity of South Korea, enhancing the reputation of the USA and its allies by winning a Western victory in the Cold War. The UN Forces lost 142,000 casualties in Korea described by one prominent historian as the 'Century's nastiest little war'.
