«Часовой» (La Sentinelle) — ежемесячный журнал, орган связи русского воинства за рубежом, а впоследствии орган Российского национального объединения. Издавался в Париже, затем (с 1936 года) в Брюсселе на русском языке с 1929 по 1988 год.
Основан в 1929 году в Париже офицерами-белоэмигрантами — Василием Васильевичем Ореховым и Евгением Тарусским. Вот как об этом рассказал В.Орехов в интервью журналу «Посев» в 1979 году:
«В 20-х годах у всех белых борцов жила надежда на близкое возобновление вооруженной борьбы, и посильной подготовкой к этой возможности все мы жили… Когда же сроки ожидания увеличились, тогда и возникла мысль о создании органа связи русского воинства за рубежом, получившая полное одобрение генерала Врангеля в 1928 г. В вышедшем в январе юбилейном номере „Часового“ описано начало его основания с одобрения уже генерала Кутепова, заменившего генерала Врангеля на его посту после кончины. „Часовой“ был основан как независимый журнал, но тесно связанный с Русским Общевоинским Союзом, на позиции которого он и стоял все эти 50 лет.»
C 1936 года редакции пришлось перенести издание журнала в Брюссель, так как правительство Франции было недовольно позицией журнала, направленной на поддержку генерала Франко, начавшего борьбу за освобождение Испании от захватившего её коммунизма, когда советские руководители стали создавать там интернациональные бригады. Издание продолжалось в Брюсселе до 1988 года, после чего выпуск был прекращен из-за возраста редактора-издателя Василия Васильевича Орехова, скончавшегося в 1990 году в возрасте 94 лет. Всего за 60 лет было выпущено 669 номеров журнала по 40 страниц в каждом.
Вначале редакторами журнала были В.В. Орехов, Е. Тарусский, П. Г. Архангельский, С. К. Терещенко, В. В. Полянский. Впоследствии Полянский и Архангельский покинули журнал, Терещенко умер в 1935 году, Тарусский погиб в конце Второй мировой войны. Василий Васильевич Орехов оставался бессменным редактором журнала до последнего номера отпечатанного на ротаторе в 1988 году.
Журнал разделен на следующие отделы: военный, военно-морской, политический, исторический, рубрика о Красной армии. В журнале освещалась жизнь русских военных от генералов и офицеров до рядовых солдат, вести из «горячих точек», где в боях участвовали отряды русских бойцов, статьи по истории русской армии и многое другое. За 60 лет существования было опубликовано огромное количество ценнейшего материала, в том числе свидетельства непосредственных участников описываемых событий. Авторами журнала были генералы, высшие военные чины, видные общественные деятели в России и в Зарубежье: Н. Н. Головин, А. К. Баиов, Ю. Н. Данилов, А. А. Керсновский, А. А. Зайцов, В. Х. Даватц и многие другие представители военной мысли русского Зарубежья. В конце тридцатых годов в журнале появились два новых раздела: «Разведчик» и «Вера. Родина. Семья». Во втором разделе неоднократно печатался известный русский философ, идеолог «белого дела», профессор И. А. Ильин. Журнал публиковал интереснейшие материалы, хронику жизни русского воинства на чужбине. Особенно ценны некрологи, которые печатались в каждом номере и давали полную информацию о судьбе русского рассеяния во всём мире, о трагических судьбах русских воинов, окончивших свой нелёгкий путь за пределами родины. «Часовой» можно по праву назвать летописью русского воинства в эмиграции, энциклопедией военной мысли за рубежом.

The Crusaders that landed in the Middle East in the late-11th century brought with them their own traditions of military architecture, but it was not long before their defensive construction began to reflect a broad array of local influences. Most early Crusader structures were relatively small, and tended to increase the existing natural and defensive features of a site. The basic forms comprised freestanding towers, castra, and hilltop and spur-castles, but urban centres, religious sites and rural dwellings were also fortified. From the 1160s, bigger, stronger and more expensive castles began to appear, in response to developments in Islamic siege weaponry. Osprey's examination of the battle at Chickamagua, one of the decisive campaigns of the American Civil War (1861-1865). By the Autumn of 1863 the Confederacy was in dire straits. In a colossal gamble, Confederate President Jefferson Davis stripped forces from all the major Confederate armies to reinforce the Army of Tennessee in a last ditch attempt to crush the Union. On 19th September the Confederates attacked the Union army along Chickamauga creek south of Chattanooga. The Siegfried Line campaign was one of the most frustrating and bloody series of battles fought by the US Army in Northwest Europe during World War II (1939-1945). In order to break through the German-Belgian border north of the Ardennes and eventually reach the Rhine, the First and Ninth divisions of the US Army dispersed themselves along the German Siegfried Line. The campaign kicked off in earnest in late September with the encirclement and eventual capture of Aachen, the first major German city to fall to the Allies. The paths to the Roer included not only the heavily urbanized area northeast of this city, but also the Hurtgen Forest along its southeastern flank. While a costly battle to seize the city continued throughout October, fighting also began in the forested area with initial attacks towards Schmidt. The German offensive to the south in the Ardennes derailed the Siegfried campaign for nearly two months and proved to be extremely costly. However, with Operation Grenade in February 1945, Ninth Army were finally propelled over the Roer River and were able to seize the vital Roer dams. Providing extensive coverage of the battle for Aachen and the fighting that ensued in the Hurtgen Forest, this title brings to life the Siegfried Line campaign which witnessed the US Army's most bitter fighting and set the stage for the final assault on the Rhine, leading the way into the heart of Germany. |
