From the Introduction: It all started back in 1961, when three NATO fighter squadrons assembled at RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk and hosted what became known as 'Tiger Meet'. The year before, aircrew of the 79th Tactical Fighter Squadron, US Air Force at Woodbridge suggested the idea of creating an informal fraternity of NATO fighter units which had tigers as part of their official badges. The 79th TFS already enjoyed a close association with No 74 Sqn of the Royal Air force at nearby RAF Coltishall, and links were quickly established with Escadre de Chasse 1/12 of L'Armée de L'Air based at Cambrai. The main objectives of the Tiger Meet were to encourage professional relationships between NATO Squadrons and foster solidarity within the air forces of the alliance. Thirty years on, NATO is still very much in business; all of the original tiger squadrons remain operational, their number swollen by many new units, including some from outside Europe. Whenever possible tiger squadrons come together as a team, discuss their varied operational roles and continue the spirit of friendship. |

The War of 1812 (or the American War as it is known in Britain) has the strange distinction of being a war largely forgotten by both of its main participants. Products of vastly different design philosophies, the Seafire F III and the A6M Zero were never intended to meet in combat, and never should have. "New France" consisted of the area colonized and ruled by France in North America from the 16th to the 18th century. At its peak in the early 18th century its territory was huge, stretching from Newfoundland to the Gulf of Mexico. This title reviews the lengthy chain of forts built to guard the French frontier in the American northeast from the province of Quebec through New York State to Pennsylvania and Indiana. Among the sites examined are forts Chambly, St. Frédéric (Crown Point), Carillon (Ticonderoga), Duquesne (Pittsburgh, PA), Ouiatenon (Quebec) and Vincennes (IN). These forts, some of them well-preserved and popular tourist destinations, ranged from large and elaborate, stone-built structures with classic, Vauban-style elements, to little more than cabins surrounded by stockades. Some, such as Chambly, looked more like medieval castles in their earliest forms. Formerly Senior Curator with National Historic Sites of Canada, historian René Chartrand examines the different fort-types and the French military technology that went into their construction, and describes the strategic vision that led to their construction, their part in the conflicts with the British colonies in the east and the Indian nations of the interior, and their effect on trade. |
