The Osprey Combat Aircraft series comprised a number of monographs on modern US and Soviet military aircraft and helicopters. The text presented a concise development and service history of the aircraft, but the main attraction of each title was the illustrations. Each title featured more than 30 b+w photos and 8 pages of colour photographs and colour artwork. Some line drawings and/or cutaway drawings were also featured in most titles. Comprehensive data tables appeared at the end of each book.

The Consolidated Aircraft Corporation was founded in 1923 by Reuben H. Fleet, the result of the Gallaudet Aircraft Company's liquidation and Fleet's purchase of designs from the Dayton-Wright Company as the subsidiary was being closed by its parent corporation, General Motors. Consolidated became famous during the 1920s and 1930s for its line of flying boats. The most successful of the Consolidated patrol boats was the PBY Catalina, which was produced throughout World War II and used extensively by the Allies. Equally famous is the B-24 Liberator, a heavy bomber which, like the Catalina, saw action in both the Pacific and European theaters.

Soaring magazine has a long history, having been published by The Soaring Society of America, Inc. for all but the first five of SSAs years. The Society was incorporated in May of 1932 just after the organizers began publishing a mimeographed newsletter called the Gliding and Soaring Bulletin. Bulletin #1 was addressed "To all who believe in the future of motorless flight in America." The soaring enthusiasts involved were aiming their efforts and financial contributions at ensuring a safe, respectable and "sporting" 1932 National Soaring Championships.
