Originally intended as a MINI DATAFILE, author Gregory Alegi has unearthed so much new material on the M.5 'fighter boat' that only the full DATAFILE treatment can do this fascinating machine full justice. With over 100 Illustrations, the majority previously unpublished, detailed narrative and colour notes with revised GAs from Ian Stair, this fine study of the colourful Macchi M.5 is a worthy addition to our growing list of Italian subjects. Never before has this flying boat been so accurately and comprehensively documented - the sheer variety of sparkling colour schemes alone should put it at the top of every modeller's new project list.

This book is written at the request of the publishers as a history of the origin, career, and influence of the United States ironclad steamer Monitor. The subject is a broad one, but is limited herein by the space proposed to only a cursory treatment. Many details have by necessity been left out, and only such material has been used as would serve best to indicate the important stages and events of the progressive story. It is the hope of the author that he has presented enough to impress his readers with the magnitude of the changes in all branches of human industry, and particularly in naval methods, that have been brought about by the steam engine during the course of the nineteenth century.

The beginning of the Cold War and the perceived need by Soviet political and military leaders to deliver nuclear strikes against the continental USA led the Soviet Union to develop new delivery vehicles - primarily strategic bombers. Thus, in 1951 the Tupolev Design Bureau brought out the Tu-95. Known to the West as the Bear, this machine was unique in that it combined turboprop engines with swept wings - a feature which accounted for the bomber's impressive top speed of 910 km/h. The basic bomber soon became a symbol of the Soviet threat and the progenitor of a whole family of combat aircraft which included missile carriers, an over-the-horizon targeting version working with missile submarines, reconnaissance versions, a long-range ocean anti-submarine warfare aircraftwhich was sufficiently different to receive a separate designation (Tu-142), a communications relay version, and assorted test beds. The Tu-95 also served as the basis for the impressive Tu-114 long-haul airliner. Some of the Bear's versions remain in service to this day. This book contains approximately 200 black-and-white and color photos illustrating the type's development and service from inception to the present day. Photos include detailed captions.
