This is the first of two volumes which will provide an in-depth study into the aircraft, camouflage and markings, and operations of the transport airlift and heavy-lift units of the Luftwaffe between 1937 and 1945. The Transportflieger, an often forgotten arm of the Luftwaffe, provided essential supply and battlefield support to both the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe in their campaigns across Western Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, North Africa, the Mediterranean and finally the Ardennes and the remains of the Reich, during the World War II. There were some 30 Knight's Cross holders who flew in the transport units. This volume includes some 200 photographs drawn from a variety of private sources, the majority of which are previously unpublished. Alongside the photographic content, the book also includes specially prepared color artworks and first-hand reminiscences from those who actually flew with the Transportflieger during the war. |

The Luftwaffe's maritime role ranged from anti-shipping operations and U-boat liaison and transport duties across great expanses of open ocean, to coastal reconnaissance and short-range patrols. Among the aircraft types featured in the two volumes which make up this series are: the Arado Ar 196A, Dornier Do 24, Blohm und Voss BV 138, Heinkel He 115, Ju 88, four-engined Fw 200 Condors and He 177s and the Do 217s used by KG 30/40/100. The name Stuka is an abbreviation of the German word sturzkampfflugzeug, meaning dive bomber. The fearsome sight and sound of the Luftwaffe's Ju-87 Stuka diving on its target, its siren wailing, spearheaded German victories in Poland, Norway, the Low Countries, the Mediterranean, and Russia between 1939 and 1943. During the first phase of World War II, the German forces advancing on all fronts, the Ju87 Stuka had been an essential element in the Luftwaffe's armory attack. However, from mid-1943 as the War drug on, the Stuka began incurring heavy losses. Dunkirk, Warsaw, Rotterdam, and other early victories became distant memories as severe reversals came about in the East. The Il-2 Shturmovik was the workhorse of the Soviet Airforce and raised havoc with the German and their allied Axis forces invading the USSR and occupying Eastern Europe. The OA vz. 30 (Obrneny automobil vzor 30) was a Czechoslovak-designed armored car used by Nazi Germany, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary during World War II. Fifty-one were built, of which the Germans seized twenty-four when they occupied Bohemia-Moravia in March 1939 and the Slovaks captured eighteen when they declared independence from Czechoslovakia at the same time. Romania acquired nine when Czech troops sought refuge in Romania after the Hungarian invasion of Carpatho-Ukraine that same month. Slovak vehicles saw combat in the Slovak-Hungarian War, the invasion of Poland, the opening months of Operation Barbarossa and the Slovak National Uprising.
