Rommel's advance into Egypt forced the Allies to retreat to the El Alamein defenses. As the British Eighth Army prepared for a massive offensive attack, there followed a period of stalemate on the ground, but in the air the Luftwaffe was faced with a numerically superior force. Luftwaffe's fighter units, outnumbered and continually starved of supplies, fought on in support of Rommel's final battles in North Africa and against the vital British island fortress of Malta. Eventually forced to tranfer units from an already critical situation on the Russian Front, German fighter pilots faced growing Allied air power but achieved some outstanding successes, and for a while the battle for Malta hung in the balance. German and Italian forces in North Africa were eventually defeated by superior Allied forces, ULTRA intelligence and the 'Torch' landings. This title tells the story of the German fighter force in North Africa from the El Alamein offensive in October 1942 to final defeat in Tunisia in May 1943. Contains numerous first-hand accounts.

Jagdgeschwader 26 was one of only two German units to remain on the Western front for the entire war. Its rise and fall mirrors the history of the German Air Force. This book gives a chronology of the unit's activities, using documentary sources, JG 26 archives and veteran's own stories. Volume one covers the period from 1939 to 1942 and contains interviews with the veterans of the JG26 unit, Allied records, radio intelligence, national archives of Germany, the UK and USAF Historical Research Agency and post-war research, to provide a daily account of the unit's activities - as only two of the 30 volumes of the unit's official diary survived the war.

This volume takes JG26 from the beginning of 1943, when the American 8th Air Force first began to make its presence felt over occupied Europe, until the end of the war. During this period in a war of attrition that it could not win, the Luftwaffe, and with it JG26, began an inexorable decline. The men of JG26 fought on however, scoring some spectacular, if isolated, successes over Normandy, Arnhem, and the Ardennes. The interviews with these men are among the unique aspects of the book. The main body of the book is a daily account of the wing's activities which takes full advantage of Allied records and post-war research and compares them with the limited material available from Germany, to give an accurate, well-balanced presentation. Only two of the thirty volumes of the unit's official diary survived the war, so the book is based largely on primary documentation obtained from the unit's veterans and on material from the national archives of Germany and the UK and from USAF Historical Research Agency. The author has also been granted unprecedented access to personal documents and photo collections, which he makes good use of. The book is fully illustrated and annotated with exhaustive appendices. Lists of JG26 casualties (with Allied victors) and JG26 aerial victories (with Allied victims) are included, the first to publish compilations of this scope. These tables will be of great value for enthusiasts and historical researchers, and of great interest to Allied and Luftwaffe veterans.

The Luftwaffe Zerstörer units, equipped with the twin-engined Me 110, were first used to great effect in the escort and air superiority roles against the Polish Air Force in 1939. Later these units took part in the occupation of Norway and Denmark, and during the Blitzkrieg against the west in 1940, when their numbers were expanded with the addition of new units. Considered by Göring to be among the elite of the Luftwaffe, the Zerstörer were deployed in the Battle of Britain, in the Balkans, North Africa and in the East, where Zerstörergruppen accounted for significant numbers of Russian aircraft destroyed on the ground and in the air. This is the first of two volumes covering the history of the Zerstörer squadrons between 1939 and 1945. Each volume adopts the traditional Classic approach of a detailed narrative matched with a comprehensive selection of photos, many previously unpublished, and specially prepared color artworks.

This is the second of two volumes covering the history of the Zerstorer squadrons between 1939 and 1945. Following the attack on the west, the Me 110 also saw major deployment in the North African and Mediterranean theatres. In the East, in the early phases of Barbarossa, the Zerstorergruppen accounted for significant numbers of Russian aircraft destroyed on the ground and in the air. As the war progressed and Germany moved over to the defensive, Zerstorer units flew the Me 210 and Me 410, which saw service as a bomber destroyer with units such as ZG1, ZG26 and ZG76 in the defense of the Reich, equipped with heavy cannon and 21cm air-to-air mortars. Also included with the scope of these titles will be a study of the Luftwaffe s long-range Ju 88 maritime Zerstorer, which were used over the Atlantic and Bay of Biscay against Allied convoys and to provide escort for the U-boats as well as lesser-known types such as the Ar 240 and Ta 154.

Although most of the glamour of military aviation has fallen to the fighters and bombers, in fact these types were comparatively late on the scene when nations first went to war in the air. The original military squadrons were formed for the purpose of reconnaissance – to find out what was happening on the battlefield and beyond, to scour the shipping lanes for enemy vessels and especially underwater predators. This task has never ceased – the Royal Air Force has always provided reconnaissance for the British Army, and the naval reconnaissance units, expanded into Coastal Command with all the romance of the big flying boats, became almost an air force in themselves. As the Second World War progressed other aviation tasks emerged: advances in technology led to the photo-reconnaissance force which eventually could cover all enemy territory.Large numbers of aircraft were also used for various transport operations, in some cases maintaining whole armies by air support when they could not be reached by land or sea. RAF transport aircraft have carried out many special tasks since, from participation in the Berlin Airlift to the swift transport of troops and equipment in other emergencies. Many other fascinating duties were and areperformed by the RAF support squadrons including paratroop dropping, special ops,air-sea rescue and various semi-operational tasks.Covers all these additional duties flown by more than two hundred and twenty RAF squadrons over the years.
