As one of seventeen night fighter squadrons established during the course of World War II, the 421st Night Fighter Squadron carried the war into the night skies over the battlefields of the Southwest Pacific when most other fighter squadrons remained on the ground. In the squadrons years of service they would be based in a number of places ranging from New Guinea, Leyte, and finally ending up as an Occupational squadron in Japan after the war. The 421st NFS would be credited with thirteen kills, three damaged, one probable, and a number they simply never received credit for. On February 2, 1945 the 421st NFS would finally be deactivated and overnight become the 68th Fighter Squadron (All Weather). The history of the 421st however, would by no means end there. The 421st would again rise in later years as the 421st Tactical Fighter Squadron and fight in the skies of Vietnam, and later be one of the first squadrons flying in Operation Desert Storm true to its tradition the 421st would fly night missions over Iraq. |

This excellent book starts with a two page history of the development of the Shilka with the rest of the book consisting of well captioned pictures.
The pictures - the majority of which are B&W - start off with a few pages of pictures of the Shilka's predecessors (ZSU-57 etc) an then move on to pictures of the Shilka itself.
Photos of all major variants of the Shilka are included as well as excellent close-up pictures which cover most, if not all, of the details on the exterior and interior. There are also technical drawings of the turret and line drawings comparing the different variants. As an added bonus there are some very good photos of the 2S6 Tunguska - the Shilka's successor. |

Fred Crismon has turned a lifetime of photographing military vehicles and rummaging through archives into a pair of superb reference books, "U.S. Military Tracked Vehicles," and its companion, "U.S. Military Wheeled Vehicles". There are hundreds of photos of all types of armored and unarmored vehicles. If you are just interested in the famous vehicles, then this book is only slightly useful--for instance, there are much better references on the Sherman tank available. But for an overview of all vehicles, including obscure machines that never served in frontline combat, this is a unique reference. Where else could you find photos of arctic snow tractors of the 1950's, or experimental light tanks of the 1930's, or airfield tractors of the US Air Force? Most types or subtypes receive a long paragraph and a single b&w photo. Should be in the library of every serious military vehicle historian. |
