Night after night through six long years of war, RAF Bomber Commands squadrons pounded away at the cities of Nazi Germany in a determined effort to bring the Third Reich to its knees. Pitted against Bomber Harris's aircrews and aircraft were some of the most effective and deadly defenses the world has ever seen. For Bomber Command to launch a 'maximum effort' raid on the Ruhr by night, or a low-level strike on an enemy target in occupied Europe by day, it involved a huge amount of planning. Who decided the policy? Why, when and where were the airfields built? How was the overall command structure organized, from the Air Council down to individual squadron level? How did the RAF train its bomber crews? What aircraft did they fly and what weapons did they use? Who were their commanders and who were the men that made up the rank-and-file of the Command? How was a raid planned and once it was launched what happened? This is the first book of its kind to present such a comprehensive overview of Bomber Command's wartime organization and operations, and is fully illustrated with a fine selection of archive photographs. Surely some of the most colorful warplanes ever to see active service, the aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force carried the samurai regard for brightly colored armor and equipment into the 20th century. The heraldic traditions of the warriors of ancient Japan found new expression as the emblems for all types of air units in the service of the Emperor. Used by flying training schools, fighter squadrons, bomber groups and, ultimately, suicide formations, all sprang from the Japanese love of symbolism and design.
Some were hundreds of years old, others existed for only a few weeks or months. Each one that can be verified from photographs is illustrated here in glorious color. This title's 100 pages of full color drawings show the emblems both by unit and by aircraft type, allowing the enthusiast to rapidly identify exactly which formation a specific aircraft may have belonged to. Numerous photos illustrate the many variations of emblems and the different aircraft types which carried them. Organizational charts give Orders of Battle in different theatres of war, ranging from Manchuria, China and Burma to the Home Islands.

The Westland Lysander became famous for picking up and dropping secret agents into Nazi occupied Europe on moonlit nights. Yet this was only one of the aircraft’s many roles. Originally designed for Army co-operation, used widely in combat and training, it went on to become a founding member of the ‘Salvation Navy’ as an air-sea rescue aircraft and later use as a target tug. Brave men flew the Lysander from the cold of prairie Canada, to the jungles of Burma and the heat of the North African desert. This book is the first ever to cover many previously undocumented aspects of the Lysander’s use, with firsthand accounts from pilots and ground crew. The photographs were chosen from official archives and private collections, and from the UK, Europe, Canada and Australia. Many have never been published before. It also presents brand-new scale drawings and colour profiles, and information from previously unused sources. Full listings of performance, production, units and secondary users are also included. Many true stories are presented here for the first time, as well as the examination of myths and previously ‘secret’ information.

In 1939, the German Air Ministry asked aircraft manufacturers for proposals for an "Amerikabomber," an ultra-long-range, four-engined aircraft capable of attacking the United States from airfields in Germany. Projects were tendered by Junkers, Focke-Wulf, and Messerschmitt. The latter proposed the Me 264 and Messerschmitt’s personal influence was such that he was not only allowed to go ahead with the design, but was also given an immediate order for three aircraft. Using original German documentation and rare photographs, this book details the story of the remarkable Amerikabomber projects. Aircraft types featured in the book include the Me 264, the Ta 400, Fw 238, Ju 390 and the jet-powered Ho XVIII B flying wing. The book also examines the reality behind the myth associated with Germany’s atomic bomb carrier.
