The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is in its 30th year of operational service as this book goes to press. That is a remarkable accomplishment for any aircraft and is usually reserved for more staid types, such as the Douglas DC-3. For a front-line fighter to serve that long, where combat is fast, furious, and survivable only by those at the leading edge of technology, is even more astounding. The McDonnell Aircraft engineers designed an aircraft in the late 1950s which surmounted an aerodynamic design plateau which has endured to this day (with only minor modifications). This book is not a 'nuts and bolts' design history of the Phantom, but since the Phantom II was originally designed for the Navy, it seems appropriate to include a brief pictorial design history in 'U.S. Navy Phantoms in Combat". Ironically, the most prolific fighter of modern times began life as a loser. The fledgling Phantom II came in second to the Vought F8U Crusader in the Navy design competition to acquire its first supersonic fighter. The Crusader was a prototypical fighter; single seat, single engine, armed with guns, and having no fire-control radar. It was a fighter pilot's dream...a pure VFR supersonic dogfighting machine, designed for one-on-one combat in the supersonic age. The losing McDonnell entry had also been a single-seater with a gun. but it came at the dawn of the age of the missileers...the proponents of the missile armed interceptor. Their reasoning went something like this; "Why get in close and grunt under heavy G while you went round and round with the enemy, when it was much easier to blast him out of the sky from long range with a sophisticated air-to-air missile?" As a result, the follow-on McDonnell fighter design diverged radically from accepted fighter aircraft design criteria of the day.

It is impossible to gather enough superlatives into one book to adequately describe the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. And it really does not matter that the twenty-eighth anniversary of the Phantom H's rollout has come and gone....that it has been over twenty years since a Phantom II first dropped bombs in anger...that at least two generations of USAF fighter pilots will have flown it operationally before it is finally retired. What matters....is that the Phantom II is still one of the best combat airplanes in the world, and will remain so until the next century. The Israelis — who have a finely-honed sense of the weapons needed in an all-out life-and-death struggle — paid the Phantom II the ultimate compliment when asked to compare it to two of the other fighters in their arsenal. If forced to choose between the F-l 5 Eagle, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, and the F-4 Phantom II. a top commander in the Israeli Air Force said. If we could only have one of the three, we would have to take the Phantom, because of it's versatility. This is a book about United States Air Force Phantom Us in combat and that means Southeast Asia. I have once again relied heavily on the participants to tell the story....as they saw it from the cockpit This is by no means the complete story of USAF PHANTOMS IN COMBAT It couldn't be. there were just too many Phantoms and too many units which flew it over the span of America's longest war. Thousands of lighter pilots checked out in the Phantom and took it into combat over Southeast Asia. However, I was able to interview what I believe is a cross-section of Phantom pilots, from MiG killers to reconnaissance pilots, from night fighters to POWs. It is their narratives that brings the USAF PHANTOM IN COMBAT into perspective.

There are dozens of photos (mostly B&W) of almost every type of Soviet aircraft made since 1945. Single engine prop planes, cargo transports, jets such as the Mig-15, Mig-21, Mig-29, Su-22, Su-25. All are sitting out in the open, rotting away or awaiting scrapping. A lot of history is covered as well in the text. Not so much about the planes, but the politics behind the Iron Curtain, the fall of the Soviet Empire and what is happening now as of 1994. Some of the history addresses the unification of West and East Germany and how the west gained access to advanced Soviet fighters. There is even a discussion of a captured US F-5 and how it made its way from Vietnam to the USSR.

Introduction: No weapon came to symbolize US military presence in Vietnam like the helicopter. Despite a multitude of other weapons systems — tanks, jet fighters, gunships, river craft, aircraft carriers — the helicopter caught the public's eye. Whether on TV or in news photos the helicopter always seemed to be there, landing troops, evacuating casualties, providing support to embattled grunts. And to a large degree this view of the helicopter in Vietnam was totally justified. For despite the contributions of other weapons, the war in South Vietnam was a 'helicopter war'. All the weapons systems used during the conflict played an important part in the fighting, but without the helicopter it would have been virtually impossible to wage the ground war in Vietnam. And despite the many varied facets of the conflict, the ground war in South Vietnam was what the whole issue revolved around. Almost from the first, helicopters were an integral part of the US involvement in Vietnam. The deployment of two helicopter companies in mid-December of 1961 was the first major symbol of US combat strength in Vietnam. The arrival of the helicopter gunships signaled the first 'overt' use of American military power against the Viet Cong (VC). Later, the arrival of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) signified a major commitment of US strength and resolve. Toward the end when the American military presence wound down in favor of Vietnamization, helicopter units were among the last to be pulled out. Finally when the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) overran South Vietnam in the spring of 1975, the last Americans in Saigon were evacuated by helicopters. And, just as in the early days of the conflict when helicopter crewmen were among the first on the casualty list, the last two servicemen to die were helicopter crewmen who perished when their chopper crashed in the South China Sea. In AIRMOBILE I have tried to deal with the various aspects of the helicopter war in Vietnam. Though all branches of the US military used helicopters in the conflict, this account deals solely with Army employment of these machines. In some respects the US Marine Corps developed its own version of the airmobile concept, but their use of helicopters in Vietnam falls outside the spectrum of this account. This book deals with the history, organization, tactics, and weapons of the Army's helicopter force in Vietnam from its initial deployment in late 1961 until the final withdrawal of US forces in the fall of 1972. During these eleven years numerous changes occurred within the structure and mission of Army helicopter units. New machines brought about new tactics and innovative employment in a seemingly never ending battle against an elusive and vicious foe. Even though South Vietnam eventually fell to the communists, the helicopter pilot and his crewmen bear little responsibility for this. Nor indeed can the blame be placed on the other American and allied servicemen who fought there. They gave their best, and in return for this sacrifice, many in their own country betrayed them. From the politicians in Washington to the draft dodgers in Canada, these brave men were let down. Anti-war sentiment whipped up by the liberal press gave aid and comfort to the enemy and eventually undermined all that had been done in Vietnam, so that in the final analysis a communist victory became almost inevitable. The famous French politician George Clemenceau once said that war is too important to be left to soldiers. In Vietnam our politicians followed that dictum with a vengeance. The results of this stupidity speaks for itself. Let us hope that in the future politicians and politically oriented general officers remember the lessons of Vietnam. For if there is any truth in Clemenceau's remark then perhaps there should be a corollary to it. If war is too important to be left to the generals then conversely peace is too important to be left to self serving politicians.

By May 1945, Germany had produced nearly 20,000 Fw 190s from various contractors. While most of these aircraft were newly constructed, many were rebuilt from older Fw 190 airframes to later Fw 190 standards. The total number of Fw 190s built and its wide use tributes Kurt Tank's excellent engineering and the Luftwaffe's desire for the design. 190s are considered among the most influential and historically significant WWII aircraft. Contains many excellent color and black and white period photos, each depicting a certain aspect of the Fw 190. Each photo has a descriptive caption for explanation. Occasionally labeled illustrations within the book also describe the aircraft in detail. Highly educational and detailed book.
