The G-4 Super Galeb is a new-generation jet strike-trainer intended to replace the successful Soko Galeb/ Jastreb family in the conditions expected to prevail in military pilot training in the late eighties and the nineties. Through backed by extensive experience gained by its predecessor through seventeen years now in service with the Yugoslav Air Force and overseas, the Super Galeb is a completely new, modern design, connected only by name and tradition to the G-2A Galeb, rather than being a derivative of the latter in a technical sense. Increasing cost and complexity of modern combat aircraft and, consequently, of corresponding operational conversion types, as well as fuel economy considerations, advocate the reduction of flying hours on operational conversion aircraft as far as possible. This has brought about a marked upward extension in the performance envelopes of modern training aircraft. The G-4 follows this trend, while avoiding over-sophistication and excessively demanding handling characteristics which would undercut its range of applicability at the low end of the scope of training missions. It thus represents a well-balanced compromise to economically and efficiently cover the widest range of pilot training requirements. After highly successful flight-testing of the prototype, the Yugoslav Air Force has placed a substantial order for the new G-4 Super Galeb strike-trainer aircraft.

The war in Vietnam was often a sludy in contrasts. No better illustration of this can be found than in the role played by the United States Navy. In the Tonkin Gulf naval aviators, flying supersonic jets off the decks of huge super carriers, participated in the aerial campaign against North Vietnam, while cruisers and the Battleship New Jersey bombarded enemy coastal areas. Further south, a vast array of small craft, few of which were ocean going, carried out a variety of tasks along the coast and up the various rivers and canals which dissected this war torn land. And w hile much has been written about the aerial and bombardment campaign, little has been written about these small craft in the war. Yet in terms of men, ships, action, and heroism this little known aspect of the Navy's war in Vietnam deserves equal treatment with the more glamorous big-ship operations that caught the public's attention through newspaper reports and television. The sailors who manned these small fragile boats and often fought pitched battles with the Viet Con% (VC) and North Vietnamese Army (NVA) at small arms range and on occasion even had to repel boarders! The kind of warfare that was waged on the inland and coastal waters of Vietnam was last practiced by the United States Navy during the Civil War, almost exactly one-hundred years earlier. As a result much of the tactics were based on the earlier experiences of the French Union Forces, or were developed through trial and error. Mistakes were made, as was to be expected, but in the end the resourceful individual sailors of these varied forces learned their lessons well and were forged into formidable fighting forces which deprived the enemy (he use of these waterways. In RIVERINE, I have tried to present a broad outline of the operations by the Brown Water Navy, as these forces came to be known, from their inception to the withdrawal of US Forces from Vietnam. The scope of this book covers the three major components of the Navy's riverine force and their subsidiary units. Each had its own distinct function but also worked in conjunction with the other two components when the situation dictated. Task force 115 (Market Time), had the responsibility for coastal patrol, surveillance, and interception of enemy gun runners on the high seas. Using equipment that ranged from Patrol aircraft such as the Neptune and Orion to small Swift Boats, which even included US Coast Guard cutters. Market Time carried out the usually monotonous duty of interdicting communist supplies along the coast of Vietnam. Task Force 116 (Game Warden), carried the war as far up the rivers and canals of Vietnam as their shallow draft boats would go. Using various modified landing craft, armored power boats, helicopters and even fixed wiog Broncos, they eventually swept the Viet Cong from the Mekong Delta.

The intent of the WALK AROUND series is to provide maximum information in a limited number of pages. This led us to the decision to restrict this book to the PBY-5/5A/6A and their variants, USAF OA-lOA and Catalinas/Cansos of the Allied Air Forces. Considered obsolete by many as the Second World War II began, the PBY proved a tremendous asset to all the services that flew her, performing in roles never envisioned by her designers. Maritime patrol, convoy escort and ASW were her primary duties, but in all combat areas, especially the South Pacific, the PBY proved to be a capable bomber and outstanding Search and Rescue Dumbo, saving hundreds of survivors. Bombing and strafing "Black Cats", overall Black PBYs flying at night, were the scourge of enemy efforts to supply bypassed forward area bases. Basically unchanged from first production in 1936 to the last PBY, delivered in 1945, the Catalina's operational capability had increased enormously with improved armament, power-boosted ammunition supply, armor, fuel dump valves, self-sealing fuel tanks, thermal deicing, radar and communication gear. PBYs continued to serve many armed services after the war. The last Navy Catalina, a PBY-6A, flew until 1957 in the Naval Reserve. Foreign air forces operated PBYs into the 1970s, principally for search and rescue and logistic support of outlying installations. Catalinas have served in many civilian roles since the Second World War, providing passenger and freight service to remote areas and for many more exotic pursuits. Some serve as water bombers, fighting forest fires all over the World with water scooped into hull tanks through retractable probes as the PBY skimmed over a lake or river surface. Several have been configured as air yachts by private owners. For improved performance, many have been re-engined with 1,700 hp Wright R-2600 engines and nacelles from B-25 bombers. A revised vertical tail improves stability and control and has led to a new name - "Super Cat".

Ships of the Royal Navy

This book is written for those who feel more than a passing interest in what is still our First Line of Defence ; to whom a ship should be a living entity, something to be recognised and understood with a little of technical knowledge and a memory of what has been and not merely to be regarded as a grey hulk of steel with a name. To those who would seek acquaintance with the Fleet, the present naval literature seems either too technical, or else not sufficiently so—there is no happy medium between the naval annuals and the picture books. For this reason my aim has been to try and steer a middle course and to treat with the various types of ships in a semi-technical way which I hope will be neither too advanced for the ordinary reader, nor too elementary for those with a more critical knowledge. At the present moment the Navy is going through a period of depression. New construction is languishing, the Washington Treaty has caused a clean sweep to be made of all the older battleships and battle-cruisers, and smaller vessels which would normally be maintained in reserve for many years to come are constantly being placed on the sale list. For all that, the passing of the old order tends to emphasize the importance of the gradual transformation of the Fleet which is proceeding almost unnoticed. By far the most interesting units which will soon be put into commission are the aircraft carriers " Eagle " and " Hermes " and by the courtesy of the Directors of Naval Construction and Naval Intelligence I have been enabled to prepare and include sketches of these ships as they will appear when completed ; the same applies to the " Emerald " a new light cruiser. In these classes of ships naval rivalry is steadily growing, and in the " carriers " we have already gained a substantial lead, both in numbers and design. No other nation has as yet completed a fast carrier, or for a long time will have the material for experimental purposes which we now possess, while the possibility of carrying the aerial offensive to enemy coasts by such means is likely to act as a strong check upon indiscriminate air raids in future wars. As regards the details given for the various classes, I have drawn upon data culled from " Fighting Ships " and official sources, and such short notes as the exigencies of space have permitted are the result either of personal observation or trustworthy information. It is proposed to publish a fresh edition of this book each year, and for that reason I shall welcome criticism and suggestion as to its scope in the future. Finally I have to thank Messrs. Gieves, Ltd., for the willing help and courtesy they have extended in the matter of tne bulk of the photographs reproduced ; without their assistance the book could never have been so fully illustrated as has now been found possible. To the Publishers I am, as always, grateful for a kindly tolerance towards my importunities in the matter of alterations and additions due to the transient nature of the naval situation, and delay occasioned by the demands of my professional work.

Starting from a basic knowledge of mathematics and mechanics gained in standard foundation classes, Theory of Lift: Introductory Computational Aerodynamics in MATLAB/Octave takes the reader conceptually through from the fundamental mechanics of lift to the stage of actually being able to make practical calculations and predictions of the coefficient of lift for realistic wing profile and planform geometries.
The classical framework and methods of aerodynamics are covered in detail and the reader is shown how they may be used to develop simple yet powerful MATLAB or Octave programs that accurately predict and visualise the dynamics of real wing shapes, using lumped vortex, panel, and vortex lattice methods.

There is increasing interest in the potential of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) and MAV (Micro Air Vehicle) technology and their wide ranging applications including defence missions, reconnaissance and surveillance, border patrol, disaster zone assessment and atmospheric research. High investment levels from the military sector globally is driving research and development and increasing the viability of autonomous platforms as replacements for the remotely piloted vehicles more commonly in use.
UAV/UAS pose a number of new challenges, with the autonomy and in particular collision avoidance, detect and avoid, or sense and avoid, as the most challenging one, involving both regulatory and technical issues.
Sense and Avoid in UAS: Research and Applications covers the problem of detect, sense and avoid in UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) in depth and combines the theoretical and application results by leading academics and researchers from industry and academia.

Nose art — if Webster had defined the term he probably would have noted that it was the personalisation of some type of machine, usually an aircraft, with a name and/or painting that reflected the present "owners" feelings towards that machine, his reason for using that machine, or his present emotions.

Nose art — there is no definition for it in any Webster's Dictionary, but just ask any air or ground crewmen from any war since the Second World War and they'll tell you not only what it is, but what it meant to them. It was a way of personalizing a piece of machinery that you had to depend on and it appeared on almost everything that was used in combat, from aircraft to tanks. Most of the really beautiful and/or outrageous art appeared on aircraft. In the Second World War. nose art was divided into four basic categories: home, patriotism or the war. music and sex. Aircraft were named after pieces of that far away, lost item — home. "Bainbridge Belle" and "Jersey Jerk" were examples of this. Patriotism and the war caused many a flourish with the paint brush. Hitler and Tojo were often seen being battered about on the sides of B-17s and B-24s. The music of World War 2 also led to a great many names like "Pistol Packin' Mama" which was used on almost every fighting aircraft type in the war. But undoubtedly, it was the magical three letter word SEX that led to most of the art work. Naked and almost naked women were painted on every type of aircraft, in almost every air force. Some of it was beautifully done like "Cherokee Strip" and "Sugar Puss." Some of it quite vulgar, such as the 8th Air Force B-17s "Mount 'N Ride" or "Rosie's Sweat Box." Quite a bit of the nose art was copied from Vargas paintings that appeared in Esquire magazine, the World War 2 equivalent to Playboy. The Vargas girls were never named in the magazine but carried every conceivable name when repeated on the aircraft. Nose art became so popular that many times the aircraft name and art was also painted on the crews flight jackets, especially in the 8th Air Force. But when war broke out in Korea, the American public, the GIs and the professional soldiers were all a little confused. Very few people knew why we were in Korea in the first place. Consequently, the nose art reflected this confusion. Oh sure, there still was the ever present subject of SEX and this was quite apparent on the B-29s that took the war deep into North Korea. The 19th BOMB GROUP based at Kadena was even subjected to censorship on their aircraft. It seems that the base commander at Kadena had his wife living with him on base, and she got upset at seeing all that nudity on the nose of the aircraft. Never mind that the crews were laying their lives on the line each and every day. against a very formidable foe. She put the pressure on her husband and he ordered that all nose art be "clothed."
