The Bell X-1, originally designated XS-1, was a joint NACA-U.S. Army/US Air Force supersonic research project built by Bell Aircraft. Conceived in 1944 and designed and built over 1945, it eventually reached nearly 1,000 mph (1,609 km/h) in 1948. A derivative of this same design, the Bell X-1A, having greater fuel capacity and thus longer engine-burn time, exceeded 1,600 mph (2,574 km/h) in 1954. The X-1 was the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound in controlled, level flight, and was the first of the so-called X-planes, an American series of experimental aircraft designated for testing of new technologies and usually kept highly secret. |

North American Aviation's (now Rockwell International) seemingly inimitable X-15 high-speed, high-altitude research aircraft remains perhaps the single most successful manned experimental flight test vehicle in U.S. history. During its nearly ten years of active flight test activity, it generated a legacy of research data and aeronautical firsts that remain unparalleled in the world of aerospace research. From materials to propulsion systems, it was a workhorse testbed that either laid or helped lay the foundations for everything from the Rockwell International Space Shuttle to the forthcoming National Aerospace Plane (now officially designated X-30A). The X-15, in turn, owes its origins to the mid-1940's birth of the dedicated NACA/NASA, Air Force, and Navy research aircraft programs that led to the Bell X-1 family, the Bell X-2, the Douglas D-558-I, D-558-II, and X-3, the Lockheed X-7, and numerous other experimental aircraft types. |

Convair B-36: A Comprehensive History of America's "Big Stick" is a collaborative effort edited and co-authored by Meyers Jacobsen exploring the history of one of SAC's air giants, the six-engine Convair B-36. From the origins of the use of six engines on bombers from around the world, along with the history and development of SAC and the use of its numbers of B-36s, this book will give the reader a greater amount of information than has ever before been published on the Convair B-36. Included with the technical and historical aspects of the B-36's use in SAC, are first hand anecdotes and accounts from the men who serviced, flew, and proudly served in SAC under Curtis LeMay. There are also detailed sections on the electronic countermeasures and various armament configurations applied in the B-36, as well as chapters containing information on B-36 attrition, and detailed accounts of the survivors that exist to this day. A wonderful book for aircraft historians, modellers, and SAC enthusiasts. |

In any discussion of American heavy bombers of the Second World War the aircraft most frequently mentioned are the B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 Liberator and the B-29 Superfortress. This is understandable, for those aeriai workhorses were produced in great numbers, served in nearly every theater of war, and formed the backbone of the U.S. Army Air Force's strategic bombing offensive against the Axis powers. It is equally understandable why the Consolidated B-32 Dominator is the least remembered participant in that great offensive, for the 115 production B-32s delivered to the Army Air Forces amounted to only slightly more than two-tenths of one percent of the 50,750 bombardment aircraft accepted from contractors during the Second World War. |

It is difficult to establish with certainty when bombs were first dropped from an aeroplane in the furtherance of a military campaign, but the earliest recorded occasion was on i November 1911, when Giulio Gavotti of the Squadriglia di Tripoli, flying a Rumpler Taube of the Italian Air Service, released four small bombs over the North African townships of Tagiura and Ain Zara. At any rate it is certain that, as a type, the use of the aeroplane as a bomber antedated the fighter by several years, for machines capable of such activity were in service or being designed some time before the outbreak of World War 1. One of the leading types at this time was the French Voisin, and the first bombing attack of the war was made by Voisins of the Aviation Militaire which bombed the Zeppelin hangars at Metz-Frascaty on 14 August 1914. During the early part of the war Germany and Austro-Hungary relied almost exclusively upon the Zeppelin airship as their main vehicle for bombing raids, and many of the first offensive sorties made by the Allies were directed at the factories or airfield sites where these 'monsters of the purple twilight' were built or housed. Before the end of 1914 a few successful bombing raids were also carried out by aircraft of the Royal Naval Air Service. It is probably fair to say that their morale value was higher than that of the actual destruction caused, for they were made mostly by small aircraft carrying only a modest load of the lightest bombs. |

One of the most pervasive views of the Battle of Britain was that heavily out-numbered but superior British pilots won their victory against overwhelming German forces through grit, courage and skill alone. This common perception, still widely held, also lays great stress on the wartime propagandist belief that the German fighter pilots were no match for their opponents. Yet it is worth reinvestigating the truth of what actually happened, as the Battle was in many ways a victory for the RAF's cautious tactics, tactics that ensured the survival of a Fighter Command which, though more than equal in courage and determination, was no match for the Germans when it came to combat experience and tactical expertise. The Battle was a 'close run thing', and if we ignore the German bomber losses, the Jagdwaffe caused greater damage than it sustained from Fighter Command. There are nearly as many interpretations of the Battle, and its significance, as there are books about the subject. Many of the issues remain matters of great controversy amongst historians and academics, and even among the survivors of those who fought. Most books have tended to 'take sides' and few offer a balanced view of the battle and the arguments surrounding it. This book is therefore intended both as a straightforward narrative history of the Battle, but also as a guide to some of the controversies and arguments. |
