At first glance this seems a reissue of Lightning in action, aircraft no.25, but that is NOT the case. It is a different book, by a different writer, with the same title and the same publisher, but published 14 years later. Loads of photographs, splendid (color)artwork, and also very informative. This one has even 8 extra pages compared to the earlier title.

A variety of vertical and short take off and landing (VSTOL) concepts were investigated during the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s with lift engines embedded in the wings or fuselage. The aircraft had serious drawbacks, but contributed significantly to the development of the Harrier. The McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II is designed for combat air support, as well as combat air patrol, missions against ground defenses, and armed escort. Although the U.S. Marines are scheduled to retire their Harriers in 2012 when the F-35 enters service, it is expected that Harriers will still be operating with foreign air forces of the world for a number of years beyond 2012. Illustrated with line drawings and color profiles.

The name Badger is not actually part of the Soviet designation of the Tu-16. Badger is in fact a NATO Reporting Name; that is a name assigned to the aircraft by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's Air Standards Coordinating Committee, a joint committee made up of members from all NATO countries. The purpose of these reporting names is to allow rapid radio identification/reporting of Soviet aircraft types. The names arc all designed to sound different so that they will not be confused, even under conditions of poor radio reception. Single syllable names are used for propeller driven aircraft, while multiple syllable names are used for jet powered aircraft The name also gives the basic mission of the aircraft. Names beginning with F are for fighters, transports all begin with C, helicopters with H. and miscellaneous types (trainers, reconnaissance, etc.) begin with M. Bomber aircraft all have names beginning with B. therefore under the NATO Reporting Name System, the Tu-16 was named Badger indicating that it is a jet powered bomber aircraft. Variants of the basic aircraft arc all identified by a suffix letter. The second Tu-16 variant identified by NATO would receive the name Badger B. the third Badger C. etc. Often this does not follow actual Soviet production. As an example, a type may actually be a third production variant, and be identified/named by NATO before the second production variant was seen by NATO observers.

Created to meet British demands for a high performance, high altitude night fighter with long endurance, Northrop Aviation started design in Nov 1940 and had a prototype flying in May 1942. These requirements, plus the bulky nature of electronics back in the early days, led to a large plane. By all accounts, the P-61 handled and flew very well. The planes were very expensive for the time and by the time they hit the Pacific and European theaters, most of the enemy had already been destroyed. I wish a little more time had been spent comparing this plane to the British Mosquito or the German He 219 night fighters. It is hard to go wrong with the In Action Series, and this book is no exception. You get a very detailed narrative with many black and white photos, excellent captions that outline every version of the plane. All of the design changes are captured as well as color plates to show the different paint schemes. A perfect book for modelers, those who want to learn a lot in a little package about this very specialized plane of WW2.
