The book takes the reader from the original Yakolev designs to the early jet designs. There aren't too many detail photos here (beloved by the modeler); you'll have to look elsewhere for those. Still, the book is a reasonable introduction to aircraft not well known in the West. |

Covered is the Junkers Ju-87 Stuka dive bomber, a major instrument of the German Blitzkrieg against Poland and Western Europe. Nevertheless, it proved woefully inadequate against British Spitfires and Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain. In addition to the early Ju-87B this book covers the more streamlined Ju-87D used later in the war, plus the heavily-armed Ju-87G tankbuster. |

Do 17 V-2 und V-3 folgten wenige Wochen später. |

Designed in 1933, the Savia Marchetti S.79 was faster than many of the bi-wing fighter planes that would have opposed it. This plane saw service in WW2 not so much because it was a war-winner, but rather there was nothing else that was better. The Italian Air Force knew this, but did the best they could. Roughly the same size and performance of the early B-25 Mitchell, the S.79 was not suitable for major changes or upgrades to improve its capabilities. There are many b&w photos, crisp and clear which is unusual for pictures of this time period. Plenty of line drawings to show you the changes made in the different versions and two pages of color drawings to show the different camouflage colors used. And there were a bunch of them. An absolute must if you're building a model of this plane, but also very interesting to history buffs, aviation fans, those who have an interest in the Mediterranean Theater of War during WW2. |

As a replacement for the obsolete SBD Dauntless, Douglas Aircraft Company at El Segundo developed the XSB2D Destroyer, a single engine two place dive bomber with the secondary capability of torpedo attack. Equipped with a tricycle landing gear, and inverted gull wings similiar to the F4U Corsair, the Destroyer was armed with two 50 caliber machine guns mounted in each wing and three 50s mounted in remotely controlled aft turrets. Maximum bomb load was 4000 lbs., which was carried internally. However, while the two place Destroyer was under development, the Navy changed it's requirements from a two place SB (Scout Divebomber) to a single place BT (Divebomber Torpedo Attack). Douglas quickly went to work redesigning the XSB2D into a single seat aircraft under the designation XBTD-1. Unfortunately the inverted gull wing design proved to be impractical and the XBTD-1 project was cancelled in June of 1944. The Douglas staff immediately went to work on a new design, after having literally created drawings overnight and gotten approval from the Navy the next day. Under the designation XBT2D-1. Douglas was awarded a contract for 15 experimental machines... |
