During World War II the United States twill three types of aircraft carriers, the Essex class heavy fleet carriers (CVs). the Independence class light carriers converted from cruisers (CVLs), and "escort" carriers, converted from merchant or tanker hulls (CVI-s). The 24 ships of the Essex class were not remarkable for any great design innovation, but essentially for being in the right place at the right time, and for doing well the task history gave them. Fourteen of the class saw action against Japan from 1943 to 1945, and all but the two most severelv damaged in the war saw extensive postwar action as licet carriers, antisubmarine cai ricrs. training carriers, and amphibious assaull ships. Despite its success, however, the Essex class was still unsatisfactory in many respects, ll was based on a class of ships restricted by treaty, its design was handicapped by a lack of operational experience, and it was forced to handle massive increases in aircraft size, antiaircraft armament and crew, all ol which resulted in serious overcrowding and overloading. |

American PT boats served in every theater of operations, from 7 IXvember 1941 to August of 1945. They served in the United States Navy, the British Royal Navy and the RtlMtea Navy. One was even captured by the German Kriegsmarine and used operationally for a short period. It is claimed that a PT boat (PT-23) shot down the first Japanese aircraft of the war. It was a PT boat (PT-41) that took GEN Douglas Mac Arthur out of Corregidor and it was a PT boat (PT-373) that took him back to the Philippines in 1944. This in Action gives a bit more text than usual - it has to in order to cover the development of the PT boat. All of the photos in the book are B&W shots of the boats at speed, docked, engine room, weapons used. Line drawings and 2 pages of camouflage scheme round out the book. |

This is a detailed history of the 8 pre-WWII carriers, published by squadron/signal publications. It is a great value, full of black and white pictures and a detailed narrative of these first American carriers. It contains a few minor typos, but is quite reliable as a source of information on the carriers that started it all, and the reasons why. |

The rigging of period ship models is arguably the most complex and daunting task for the modeler. An eighteenth-century man-of-war boasted mile upon mile of rigging, over 1,000 blocks, and acres of canvas. To reduce the rigging in scale and yet retain an accurate representation is a formidable undertaking. After studying numerous eighteenth-century museum models, the author has drawn some four hundred diagrams which clearly show how each separate item of rigging is fitted to the masts, yards, and sails. Each drawing deals with only one particular aspect and is accompanied by a logical and straight forward narrative. For example, the fore deadeyes and channels are shown before the shrouds are added, and these are depicted before the ratlines are added. Whether a model maker needs to rig a whole ship or just requires information on one aspect, it is all here in this beautifully produced volume that no modeler of period ships should be without. |

This is the second "In Action" book that deals with US Battleships of WW2. This book covers the 'fast' Battleship classes - the North Carolina, the South Dakota and the most infamous US Class of Battleships - the Iowa Class - Iowa, New Jersey, Wisconsin and Missouri. The narrative covers the development and influences of each class, where/when they saw action. The book was published in 1984, so it captures the updates made to the Iowa Class ships under the Regan years, but not service in the first Gulf War. There are line drawings showing different rader, missle launchers, side views showing early and later modifications. Plenty of B&W photos showing the different gun mounts, interior of the 16" turret. This book, and its companion, are perfect for the modeler, or someone just getting started in studying these famous ships of WW2. |
