Old, slow and ungainly, they had little 'glamor'. They escorted convoys and bombarded shores, leaving the headline-making battles for their newer sisters. So, at least, it seemed from reading those headlines. Yet the reality was quite different. That they were old was undeniable. The newest of them was already 18 years old when WW II broke out, the oldest was an antique 29. A few of them had been re-engined, giving them a top speed of 23kt. Most were still slogging along on their original power-plant and would be lucky to ever see 20kt again. They were far from beautiful, most having been refitted and rebuilt so many times that any notion of the original plan had long since disappeared. Yet, somehow, they managed to be at the right place at the right time, when history hung in the balance. They were at Pearl Harbor on a quiet Sunday morning when America suddenly found itself at war. They were at Surigao Straits, winning the last battleship surface engagement in history, while their newer sisters were off chasing decoys. And, fittingly, they were off the coast of Japan at the end of that great struggle, four long years after it began. While a case can be made that the US Navy's fast battleships were underemployed and misused, no such criticism can be made about the older battleships. They gave all that was asked and more, from the first shot of the war to the last. |

American submarines were a decisive element in winning WWII in the Pacifiic accounting for more than half of the nearly 10 million tons of Japanese naval and merchant shipping lost during the war, while also carrying out such other important duties as pilot rescue, reconnaissance and espionage. The burden of the submarine war from 1942 until victory in 1945 was borne by the US Navy's Gato-class submarines (including Balao and Tench variants). Many of these subs continued to serve after receiving postwar refits in the US and foreign navies. More than 100 b/w photos, 6 color profiles, line drawings and color covers. |

Amphibious landing forces are charged with landing enough assault forces and supplies to maintain and reinforce a beachhead on enemy shores. This beachhead would be held until sufficient ground troops can land and carry the fight to the enemy and defeat him on his own soil. The first recorded amphibious landing on enemy soil was carried out by a strong Persian force landing at Marathon, Greece in 490 BC. A much smaller Greek Army eventually defeated the Persian Army and the Persians were forced to withdraw. Julius Caesar of Rome employed amphibious forces when he conquered England in 54 BC. In 1066, Norman ruler William the Conqueror used amphibious forces to cross the English Channel and defeat the English forces at the Battle of Hastings. During the American Revolution, General George Washington utilized the element of surprise and wooden rowboats to cross the Delaware River on 25 December 1776. His forces attacked British (Hessian) forces at Trenton, New Jersey. Washington's crossing of the Delaware marked the first time American forces had utilized amphibious warfare. In 1847, during the Mexican War, US Marines attacked Veracruz, Mexico from the sea. They secured the beach and defeated the Mexican forces. The US War Between the States (Civil War) produced few amphibious landings, with the exception of the Northern forces attacking the Batteries Tracy and Huger, part of the defenses of Mobile, Alabama in 1864. The last US amphibious landings during the 19th Century occurred in the Philippines Islands, when American troops attacked Spanish forces during the 1898 Spanish-American War. This would not be the last time American forces would have to attack that island group. World War One saw no amphibious landings since American forces landed on friendly territory during that conflict. |

An excellent blend of the history of US light cruisers, development of each class and what makes one different from the other. The B&W photos help show the gun positions, the lines of each class and there are two pages of color plates showing the camoflague schemes used during the war. Plenty of data and statistics, line drawings that show the planes, different weapons used (gun mounts from 20mm all the way up to 8" cannon). A really great book for modelers and those who want to get an introduction of US cruisers that were built and used to great effect in WW2. |

There were 11 different classes of Heavy Cruisers created by the US before/during WW2. Part 2 covers the the last seven. An excellent blend of the history of US heavy cruisers, development of each class and what makes one different from the other. The B&W photos help show the gun positions, the lines of each class and there are two pages of color plates showing the camoflague schemes used during the war. Some of these photos show what like is like on a warship - mundane tasks such as refueling at sea, loading huge shells. Plenty of data and statistics, line drawings that show the planes, different weapons used (gun mounts from 20mm all the way up to 12" cannon), radar masts and missles (post WW2). A really great book for modelers and those who want to get an introduction of US cruisers that were built and used to great effect in WW2. |

The German equivalent of the American PT boat, Schnellboots are generally considered the best Motor Torpedo Boats of World War II. These formidable craft saw constant action from the first to the last days of World War II. Operating on every front they extracted a heavy toll of Allied merchant and Naval shipping. Authors Connelly and Krakow summarize the technical development of these formidable craft in this Squadron/Signal volume, #18 in their 'Warships' series. Though Germany had mixed success with MTBs in WWI, German strategists began developing a boat suitable for action in the North Sea in the early 1920s. Through the 1930s various S-class boats were built, eventually producing the S-38 class and its successors which gave such exemplary service in the North Sea, English Channel, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and the Barents Sea. Equipped with two-four torpedoes, 7.92mm machine guns, 20mm, 37mm and 40mm cannons, S-boats sank over 130 merchant ships, 13 destroyers and numerous other Allied watercraft. 'Schnellboot in Action' is an excellent introduction to the S-boats. Though operations are briefly summarized, the emphasis here is clearly on the technical development of these fearsome MTBs. Each class is covered in turn. Additional sections cover Engines, Main Armament, Secondary Armament, Radio, Navigation, Radar, Camouflage, Tactics and so on. Over 110 photographs and numerous diagrams along with four pages of Don Greer color artwork and profiles help tell the Schnellboot story. |
