All the World's Battleships provides the technical data, gives the design background and outlines the careers of the world's battleships and battlecruisers. The information has been revised and expanded from Conway's renowned 'Fighting Ships' series. Organized by nation, type, and class, each battleship is described in detail and every page is illustrated with plans and historic photographs, many shown across double pages so that the fascinating details can be appreciated. The ship histories include references to important technical and political developments in the various navies of the world. |

This publication mainly covers the battleship Scharnborst, although much of the data is compared with that of her sister ship Gneisenau. It contains the most important technical information along with a brief general history of shipbuilding and a description of ship construction. There are additional notes on life on board, crew training and the various states of readiness. There are numerous photographs of both the original ship and a variety of models, which are complemented by illustrations of Gneisenau to demonstrate the vital differences between these two sister ships. This collection of data, specifications, photographs and line drawings provides the modeller with all essential information on his chosen subject, and directs him to further sources of research material. Some of the general information contained within this title may refer to other units of the same class but only when these are similar to the ship covered by the appropriate book. All the plans within these pages are smaller scale renderings of those contained in an original 'Planrolle' (set of drawings) which accompanied the first German edition of the book. |

This is a great book for those who are interested in the technical information about the US Navy battleships. In great detail the book covers the evolution of the battleships from the early monitors of the post Civil War period to the cancelled Montana Class during WWII. Technical information regarding design, design proposals, dimensions, types of guns/calibers, machinery, armor, internal hull arraignment, etc. are included. |

This book has been written principally for makers of ship models. In fact the research which forms the bulk of the material contained here was begun many years ago with the sole purpose of building a model of Royal Caroline, with Plate XLIX of Chapman's Architectura Navails Mercatoria as the only available item of information. In addition to the most detailed plans, we have sought to provide as much information as possible concerning the ship's history and, within the limits of the available space, the contemporary construction techniques and fitting-out procedures, with particular reference to rigging. Given the quality of British specialist publications (recently in particular) on British seamanship and individual ships, it is unusual for foreign authors to venture into a subject like this for such a demanding public. The fact is, however, that once our initial orientation difficulties were overcome, the existence in Great Britain of institutions which are a model of efficiency, such as the Public Records Office, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Archives, have made our research much easier. We wish once more to express our gratitude to these institutions, as we did in the Italian edition of the book, and particularly to: NAM Rodger of the Public Records Office, DJ Lyon, James Lees and Alan McGowan of the National Maritime Museum. Finally we wish to explain why we have made some use of the metric system in dealing with a subject like this where the old systems of measurement are still widely used by modelmakers in English-speaking countries. This particularly concerns the thickness of the rigging, which contemporary writers expressed in inches of circumference. We had laboriously converted these to diameters in the metric system for the Italian edition and it seemed a cumbersome and perhaps misleading operation to reverse the process. References to practices in Continental navies and to the development of rigging were much more plentiful in the text and footnotes of the Italian edition. English language readers have a wealth of specialised works available on this matter which anyone wishing to widen his knowledge of naval history can consult. We will refer the reader to them, but we wish to mention expressly those which we have found most useful in our work, namely Masting and Rigging ofEnglish Ships of War by James Lees and Seamanship in the Age of Sail by Harland and Myers. |

1992 marked the 500th anniversary of the European discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus. The details of Columbus's ships - the Santa Maria, Nina and Pinta - remain lost to historians, for the ships were built before the first manuals of shipbuilding were written, and no documentation or illustration has survived. Nevertheless, extensive research has allowed the construction of a number of replicas over the years, and those built in Spain in 1892 and 1927 are regarded as among the most realistic. The new replicas built for the 1992 celebrations are without doubt the most accurate reconstructions yet. Many years of research by Jose Martinez-Hidalgo and his successors into the naos and caravels of the 15th and 16th centuries has allowed a whole new insight into the design and construction of the famous ships of Columbus. |

At 21 minutes to eight in the evening of 3 September 1939, the SS Athenia, outward bound from Liverpool to Montreal with 1400 passengers, was struck by a torpedo. This was the first attack in the Second World War to be made by the German Navy, and the torpedo was fired by U30, a Type VII U-boat, commissioned in 1936. On 10 July 1945, the British steam fishing boat Kned was sunk by mine off Lizard Head, in a minefield laid in August 1944 by U 218, a VIID U-boat, commissioned in 1942. Thus the German naval war began and ended in submarine action. Despite the operations carried out by the more glamorous surface ships, such as Bismarck, GrafSpee, Scharnhorst and Tirpitz, the major effort of this war was made by the Submarine Arm, which began hostilities with 57 boats, of which just 18 were Type VIIs. At that time (September 1939) neither side had an inkling of what effect these boats would have as hostilities continued for five years and nine months, although Britain had instituted convoy sailing as early as August that year. Admiral Raeder, Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy, and Admiral Donitz, Commander of the Submarine Arm, were agreed at the time that the German Navy could contribute little to the war apart from showing that its men knew 'how to die gallantly'. |

The name Fairmile is justly famous for the company's various Coastal Force motor launches and other types used by the Royal and Commonwealth navies (as well as those nations with navies in exile) during the Second World War. The Fairmile 'B' was built in very large numbers, both in the UK and abroad, and later 'D's are well known for being the most heavily armed craft for their size of that period - but how did that vast organisation come into being? This is a small part of that story and the process that brought the 'D' into existence. During the First World War the success of German submarine attacks in British coastal waters led to demands for large numbers of anti-submarine motor launches. These were not available from British sources, and the need was met by the production of some 580 motor launches, by the Electric Boat Company of Bayonne, New Jersey, USA, for shipment to the United Kingdom. Their design was based upon that of a type of motor cruiser popular in the US. Early units were 75ft overall, but later deliveries were 80ft in length. Powered by two 6-cylinder petrol engines, and displacing about 42 tons, they were armed with a single 3pdr gun, on occasion a Lewis light machine gun, and depth charges. Whilst they did provide some measure of defence, in truth, they were not very well suited to the conditions that prevailed along British coasts, being found wet in any seaway, and consequently of limited operational value. However, it proved that there was a requirement in time of war for large numbers of motor launches for patrol and anti-submarine duties. Missing Pages: 35-38 & 69-70. |

The subject of this book is a Flower class corvette built in Vancouver and commissioned in January 1941. Agassiz (pronounced Aga-see) in her as-built, short forecastle configuration differed considerably from the common conception of the long-forecastle 'Flower', such as the museum ship I1MCS Sackville in Halifax, Nova Scotia, or the Greek corvette Kriezis (ex-Coreopsis) which represented HMS Compass Rose in the film The Cruel Sea, or 1/72 scale models from the popular Matchbox/Revell kit. It was, however, the short-forecastle configuration that was in the mind's eye of Nicholas Monsarrat when he wrote The Cruel Sea, HM Corvette, East Coast Corvette and others, and this version best represents the Canadian Flowers as they were flung into the thick of the bitter Atlantic convoy battles of 1941-2, described in James Lamb's The Corvette Navy and Alan Easton's 50 North: Canada's Atlantic Battleground. In 1939, like the other combatants, Canada plunged into a war for which her naval staff were ill prepared. Despite the U-boat campaign waged by Germany in World War I, little attention had been paid in the 1920s and 1930s to the problems of anti-submarine warfare, since it was widely believed that the future threat to merchantmen would come from surface raiders and from aircraft. The RCN had investigated the possibility of building escorts based on the handsome RN Halcyon class sloops, but these plans had not reached fruition by the time hostilities broke out. The timely arrival of plans for a 'Patrol Vessel of Whaler Type' from the British Admiralty in 1939 thus offered a solution to a very serious weakness in Canadian naval preparations for the new war. The corvette (as the new vessel became known) was widely seen as a stopgap until more sophisticated escorts were available, but in the event was built in great numbers. |
