The 20th century battleship Tennessee (BB43) was the sixth, largest, and most famous surface combatant to carry that name into the annals of American naval history. Christened in honor of the state of Tennessee whose star (the sixteenth) came into the Union on June 1,1796, the great ship, like its state, owed its name to the Cherokee Indian word Tanasie, which originally referred to several indigenous Cherokee settlements in the territory now nicknamed the Volunteer State. Affectionately dubbed the "Big T," "Tenny," 'Tenny Maru," and 'The Rebel" or 'The Rebel Ship," she may also have been called the "Volunteer Battlewagon" in tribute to her name state's military traditions and such martial luminaries as John Savier, Andrew Jackson, Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, David G. Farragut, and Alvin C. York. She was the pride of America when commissioned in 1920, and originally and uniquely manned largely by home-state boys, a visible reminder of U.S. power in the interwar years. Slightly hurt at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, she was quickly into the Pacific war. From beginning to end the vessel remained a worthy symbol of the people whose spirit is reassuringly captured in a quote from Andrew Jackson: 'You are uneasy? You never sailed with me before, I see!" |

The convoys which took war material to the USSR via the northern trade route during the Second World War have a special place in the history of the war at sea because of the unequalled hardships they faced. After being assembled in the grim harbour of Hvalfjord in Iceland or a remote Scottish loch the convoys would sail through the Norwegian and Barents Seas to the Russian port of Murmansk in the Kola Inlet or Archangel on the White Sea. The route the convoys had to follow is notorious for bad weather and conditions which border on the limits of human endurance. In winter the northern latitudes produce conditions of continuous darkness, while from May to August there is perpetual daylight. The fierce storms which frequently battered the convoys caused ice to build up on ships' superstructures and deck fittings, and this had to be chipped away to prevent the vessels from becoming top-heavy. This was treacherous work, and a man's chances of survival should he fall overboard into that icy water were very slim. |

The battleship Maryland (BB-46) was the third, largest, and most famous ship to carry that name—and the last. She was christened in honor of the state of Maryland, whose star, the seventh, came into the Union on April 28,1788, 70 days before the official ratification of the United States Constitution. Affectionately dubbed "Old Mary" or "Fighting Mary," she also may have been called the "Old Line" or "Free State Battlewagon" in honor of that famous Continental infantry unit enshrined in the state's nickname. She was the pride of America and the world's most powerful dreadnought when commissioned in 1921, and the least damaged of all the battleships at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7,1941. Quickly into the thick of the Pacific war, the ship was under attack 100 times more—with the Japanese reporting her sunk on three different occasions. From beginning to end, the vessel remained a worthy symbol of the people and state whose spirit was put into words by James Ryder Randall and matched to the music of an old German hymn: "Maryland, My Maryland!" |

The battleship Pennsylvania (BB-38) was the third U.S. Navy ship to carry that name. She was christened in honor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, second of the original 13 states, which ratified the Constitution on December 12, 1787. Affectionately nicknamed the "Mighty Penn," the "Pennsy," and even "Old Falling Apart," she was sometimes called the Keystone Battlewagon and was often fleet flagship in the years before World War II. Slightly damaged at Pearl Harbor, she became the only U.S. dreadnought to participate in 13 successive amphibious operations—from Attu to Lingayen—and the only American battleship to win, during the course of the war, a Navy Unit Citation. "Dying with her boots on," the valiant vessel closed her career as an A-bomb test ship, remaining to the end a worthy symbol of the Commonwealth's people and the spirit of "Virtue, Liberty, and Independence." |

No Cover! Australian and New Zealand Warships, 1914-1945', traces the development of the two navies from the Great War, through to V-J Day, 15th August, 1945. The book highlights the technical aspects of the ships, including weapons carried and any special design or performance features. As the story of these ships is inseparable from that of the navies, brief chronologies of the major events precede the main sections. Part one describes the RAN during the Great War of 1914 1918, the years of peace 1919-1939, and the Second World War 1939-1945. The New Zealand Section, part two, lists in turn, vessels operated by the Government from 1914-1921, the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy 1921-1941 and the RNZN from 1941 to 1945. Every ship listed is classified by type, e.g. cruiser, patrol craft, support, etc., and then sub-divided as either built-for-the-purpose or requisitioned. During 1914 18 Australia's Navy operated a total of 63 ships, of which 22 were requisitioned from private sources. The number of vessels reduced significantly during the mid-war period, only to swell again in the Second World War. Many privately owned craft were taken up for war service and by August, 1945. the number had reached 679. In comparison the 209 ships specifically acquired between 1939 and 1945 for fleet operations included ships on loan, e.g. N class destroyers, and those ordered prior to the outbreak of war but completed during the conflict, e.g. PARRAMATTA, WARREGO and KOALA. |
