Circumstances arising out of the war, not least of which being enemy bombing of the publisher’s premises in London, caused delay in the publication of this early wartime edition of Jane’s Fighting Ships due to appear in 1940. Includes the first War Loss section of the Second World War. Information regarding the German Navy was scant and although many U-boats had been destroyed no official figure was available but American sources estimated that 300 boats were under construction. It was treated with caution that BISMARCK and TIRPITZ were in full commission, but as we now know this was shortly to be the case with regards the former battleship which would be sunk in the near future taking HMS HOOD with her. British war losses to date included ROYAL OAK (already credited with having been sunk by a U-boat), GLORIOUS, COURAGEOUS, SOUTHAMPTON, EFFINGHAM, CALYPSO, CURLEW, plus destroyers, minesweepers, etc. Eleven AMCs had also been lost including RAWALPINDI and JERVIS BAY. Japan and America had not yet entered the war and their respective fleets were still intact. The book provides a wealth of information on the warships of all nations and the book is profusely illustrated with photographs, drawings, etc.

At the same time I intended to highlight longterm planning of the larger navies, although there is sometimes just very little information available. Bei Beginn meiner Übersetzungen der Dokumente aus Quellen der amerikanischen Marineoperationsabteilung, die die Fahrten von U-172 betreffen, waren mir als jungen Menschen, der 20 Jahre nach Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges geboren wurde, die Schrecken des U-Boot-Krieges weitgehend unbekannt. Nachdem mir der Verfasser das Manuskript zur Einsicht gab, um dieses Vorwort zu schreiben, war ich von den Geschehen jener Zeit tief beeindruckt; von der Härte der Kämpfe, vom bedingungslosen Einsatz - beider Seiten - dem Opfergang einer ganzen jungen Generation und den oft unmenschlichen Bedingungen, denen gerade die U-Boot-Fahrer ausgesetzt waren. Dauernde wochenlange Einsatzbereitschaft und ständige Angst waren ein enormer psychischer Druck, der nur durch bedingungslose Disziplin, Kameradschaft und durch das Wissen auf die Verläßlichkeit der Besatzungsmitglieder gemeistert werden konnte. Was uns der Verfasser in diesem Werk in sachlicher, detailierter Weise schildert, sollte alle Menschen, auch außerhalb Deutschlands, aufrufen, eine zweite „Arena-Atlantik" niemals Wirklichkeit werden zu lassen.

Die Geschichte dieses meistgebauten deutschen U-Boot-Typs, es wurden davon 693 Boote gebaut, begann, - genau genommen -, am 29. März 1915, als die U-Flottille Flandern unter Korvettenkapitän Bartenbach in Dienst gestellt wurde. Man kann, wie noch berichtet wird, diesen Mann auch als geistigen Vater dieses Typs bezeichnen. In Flandern brauchte man damals kleine, sogenannte Küsten-U-Boote. So entstanden die ersten UB-Boote. Als erstes dieser Klasse und der Flottille Flandern vernichtete UB 4 am 10. April 1915 den britischen Dampfer "Harpalyce" (5950 BRDT). Die ersten UB I-Boote waren sogenannte Einhüllen-Boote mit einer Wasserverdrängung von 127 t über Wasser und 142 t unter Wasser. Man kann sie als Vorläufer des Typs II der Kriegsmarine, den sogenannten "Einbäumen" ansehen.
