The König class were the last dreadnought battleships to join the German High Seas Fleet before the outbreak of war in 1914, and only two more battleships were completed in the next four years. HMS Eagle was an aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy. It was laid down prior to the First World War as the Battleship Almirante Cochrane for Chile. In 1917 she was purchased by Britain for conversion to a through-deck aircraft carrier, being commissioned in 1924. Eagle remained in service at the outbreak of the Second World War, serving mainly in the Mediterranean, where she was took part in escorting several convoys to Malta, and in delivering fighter aircraft to Malta to boost its air defences. Eagle was torpedoed and sunk by the German U-boat U-73 on 11 August 1942, while part of the escort to a convoy to Malta.

The Imperial Japanese Navy's 18inch-gun battleship Yamato and her sister ship Musashi were tragic ships indeed in all respects. For one thing, neither of them was ever employed for the purpose for which they were designed. They had been designed and built to take the lead in the world naval big gun race. with the first 18inch guns in service, but by the time they were commissioned naval strategy and tactics had been revolutionised. Ironically this revolution had been effected by the Japanese, so that the two ships had no chance to destroy their principal intended targets, American battleships. For another thing, they were eventually sunk in one-sided combat at the hands of enemy air forces in a manner unforeseen at the lime they were designed and built. Both 18inch-gun battleships, which would have been the most powerful units in any big gun battle with an enemy fleet, actually did almost nothing to influence the outcome of World War II.

The German Schnellboote or S-Boat was known to the British as the E-Boat. HMS Cavalier was commissioned on 22 November 1944. She served in World War II and in various commissions in the Far East until she was decommissioned in 1972. After decommissioning she was preserved as a museum ship and currently resides at Chatham Historic Dockyard.
