For those who are familiar with the work of Jim Mesko and Squadron/Signal publications (particularly the "in action" series), this will not disappoint. "M60 Patton in Action" is a detailed and informative look at the late model Pattons. Criticism levied at the amount of color photography in the book should be taken with a grain of salt given that the tank entered service in the early 1960s and source material available between 1960 and 1986 (when the book was published) was probably largely limited to black and white military photography. Color plates and paintings supplement the b&w photography, diagrams and text well.

The T-34 was the single most effective tank design of the Second World War. It was produced in larger numbers than any other tank and few subsequent tank designs escaped its revolutionary influences. When it originally entered combat in the summer of 1941, it was markedly superior to any tank in the German arsenal. The Wehrmacht was able to eventually counter the T-34 with heavier tanks like the Panther, Tiger and Royal Tiger, but the introduction of the improved T-34-85 and the new IS-2 restored Soviet superiority. The Wehrmacht paid for the technical ingenuity of the Panthers and Tigers by their enormous cost, complexity and frequent unreliability. The smaller and more robust T-34 could be produced in quantities, two or three times greater than its German adversaries and, in the end, emaciated German tank regiments were routed by an overwhelming wave of Soviet tank brigades.

Development of an improved replacement for the PzKpfw IV medium tank had proceeded at a slow pace, since the IV had proven to be a reliable and versatile design. Despite fairly high losses during certain stages of the Polish and French campaigns, the Germans were relatively satisfied with the PzKpfw II, III, and IV. Though certain pre-war incidents should have warned them that the Soviet Union was preparing a new and heavy armored force, the German military leaders disregarded these warnings. One such incident took place during the spring of 1941 when Hitler specifically ordered that a Russian military commission be shown the latest developments in tank designs. After viewing the Panzer IV the Russians refused to believe this was the latest and heaviest German tank and were so insistent that the German Ordnance Office concluded that the Russians must already possess better and heavier tanks.

In our present volume dealing with "British Armour In Action" we shall begin our discussion with the Battle of France and proceed to North Africa. The coverage of vehicles has been limited to those which appear in service by the time of the Battle of El Alamein. These limits cover almost one half of the Second World War period and were the most formative for the British tank forces who would later enter battle on the European continent. The lessons learned in France and North Africa were done so from practical experience in contrast to book principles, though book principles had been tried in the beginning. One book which might have been of some assistance was the one being written in Poland and France by the German Panzer divisions. The engagements between British and Italian forces in North Africa could not be considered a sound basis to prepare future plans in handling armored formations. The down to business aspects of North Africa commenced with the arrival of the Desert Fox, Rommel.

Publications concerning German tanks usually dwell on the types used by the Wehrmacht in World War II, the Panther and Tiger, as well as Panzer III and IV, or they offer a present-day technical evaluation of the Leopard 1 or Leopard 2. The activities of German tanks in World War I and the technical beginnings of early German tanks are touched on only marginally. This book covers the earliest forms of German armored fighting vehicles used primarily in WWI.

The campaign in North Africa during WWII was one of the most important of the conflict. The allies fought for control of North Africa against the German Afrika Korps led by Rommel. But the part played by Mussolini's Italian troops, and in particular the armored divisions, in support of the Germans is not so well known. This painstakingly researched book looks in detail at the role of Mussolini's three armored divisions - Ariete, Littorio and Centauro - and the invaluable part they played in Rommel's offensive between 1941 and 1943. Indeed, the author is able to show that on many occasions the presence and performance of the Italian armored divisions was crucial to the success of the axis campaign.
