In view of their crucial importance to military success, mobilization and logistics deserve thorough attention from historians. Although the Army’s ability to mobilize has improved in recent years, much remains to be done, and the Korean War experience can provide valuable insights. Planners involved in the attempt to perfect current automated manpower mobilization systems need to prepare for possible strains and even collapse of those systems. In an emergency, we may have to rely on manual methods such as those that saw us through the Korean War. Industrial preparedness also has received increased emphasis and support in the last decade. But in this area, as well, there is much to be learned from the Korean War’s partial mobilization. Finally, we can study with profit the problems encountered in supplying the large forces that we fielded in Korea. Planners who deal with theater logistics could benefit from detailed analysis, solidly grounded in original sources, of those problems and the solutions devised for them during the war. This monograph should provide impetus to examine Korean War mobilization and logistics. Through a discussion of the available literature, the author presents an overview of the most pertinent issues addressed thus far. He then suggests how future investigators might elaborate on particular points, and offers topics that warrant further research.

Our national tradition of honoring prominent officials is never more in evidence than following the death of an American dignitary. The ceremonies of the public funeral salute his accomplishments in life and demonstrate the Nation's recognition of a debt owed for his services. Long-standing military customs and the wishes of the next of kin are the foundations of these ceremonies. The military departments consequently have important roles in performing last rites, although many other agencies of the Federal Government participate in varying degrees. Collectively, these agencies conduct several types of funerals, ranging from the modest to the elaborate. This gradation permits the Nation to recognize properly the wishes of the next of kin and the rank or public station held by an official prior to or at the time of his demise. This book presents accounts of funerals conducted for civil and military officials, active and retired, and for the unknown servicemen of three wars between 1921 and 1969. Also described are farewell ceremonies honoring foreign dignitaries who died while on duty in the United States. Since the pattern for present- day public funerals has evolved from these ceremonies, this volume, in addition to being a valuable historical record, contains guidance for arranging final honors.

The expiration of authority to draft young men for military service in mid-1973 placed the United States Army on a volunteer footing for the first time since 1948. In preparation for this challenge, the Army had initiated the Modern Volunteer Army Program two and a half years earlier to attract and increase the enlistment of able men and women, raise the quality of Army life, and improve professionalism throughout the rank and file. An important part of the program was Project VOLAR, a field experiment conducted at selected Army installations from 1970 to 1972 to develop methods and procedures for achieving the program's objectives. |

The United States Army Medical Service Corps is an important national resource with a long and distinguished history. Many thousands of officers have proudly served in its ranks, selflessly prosecuting the nation's defense missions in peace and war throughout the world. With varied academic backgrounds and disciplines, these officers have been widely recognized and highly regarded leaders in their respective fields. They represent the growth in medical science and military medical operations and administration over two centuries. This work documents the history of the Medical Service Corps through the work of an active duty MSC offlcer who began researching and writing in 1983 when the corps assumed this task as its own project. The account is the story of the corps, told by the corps for its members, the Army, its sister services, and the nation it serves. The lessons of its history are rooted in Americats wartime experiences, and they are intended for those who will follow in the hope that our future leaders will learn from the past. It is also important that progress documented by this account continue, for the officers of the Medical Service Corps have by no means achieved their highest goals. |

The mid-twentieth century has added new dimensions to the roles and missions long performed by the United States Army. In many lands whose peoples speak alien tongues and observe strange customs, the American soldier is now living and working as ally, friend, and counselor. As a representative of the American way of life, as a persuasive advocate of his country’s modern equipment and tactical doctrine, as partner in a global system of achieving security for the entire free world, he is called upon to demonstrate a variety of talents-patience, tact, linguistic ability, and superior professional knowledge, among others. In all that he does, he must make a supreme effort to understand people and traditions often vastly different from his own. One of the pioneers in this new type of Army endeavor was the Military Advisory Group to the Republic of Korea, commonly known as KMAG. This publication chronicles the major events in the proud history of the Army Nurse Corps. Although it is not intended as an analysis of historical events, it highlights the major milestones in the evolution of the Corps. The notable contributions of Corps members and their colleagues to military and civilian nursing practice, education, administration, and research are recorded. Legislation and other significant events that effected changes in the history of the Corps are mentioned. Emphasis is placed on the continuing efforts of the Corps to provide high-quality nursing care to soldiers, their families, and retired military and their dependents in time of peace and war and in the carrying out of humanitarian missions. Although not every Corps member is mentioned, all the entries reflect the proud heritage of the Corps and provide ideas for scholarly historical research. History provides a basis for the present and direction for the future. At the present time, numerous changes in the military and the worldwide community are creating new and complex challenges for the Corps. Chiefs of the Army Nurse Corps, past and present, have provided professional and committed leadership to prepare us for these challenges. This chronology was first prepared in 1959, with revisions in 1960, 1961, 1973, 1975, 1981, and 1987. Although the original format is preserved, the entire manuscript has been updated and new appendixes added. |
