The 94th US Infantry Division was an organization formed late in the Second World War, made up largely of draft-deferred university students as enlisted men and an officer corps pulled together from various domestic postings with unfortunate consequences for mutual trust and respect. Initially used as part of the force blockading the Brittany ports after D-Day, in December of 1944, the division was incorporated into General Patton’s Third Army south of the Moselle-Saar Triangle, the base of which was a portion of the Siegfried Line known as the Orscholz Switch. Its first combat experience came in battalion-sized attacks during that terrible winter while the Battle of the Bulge raged to the north, and the Division suffered heavy casualties, many due to the ferocity of the winter weather. Patton, with characteristic zeal, excoriated the division’s officers and senior NCOs for the rate of non-combat casualties. Thereafter, the division was ordered forward on an all-out assault to break through the Siegfried Line. After horrific fighting against entrenched defenders, with ice turning to mud as spring approached, on February 19, 1945, the 94th broke through to open the roads to Trier and the Rhine. This book is the most comprehensive study to date of the fierce fighting between the 94th U.S. Infantry Division and their German counterparts during that spring of 1945. It sheds new light on the achievements of the outnumbered division in penetrating Germany’s Westwall. With characteristic verve and detail, Tony Le Tissier narrates the action and illuminates the tribulations and sacrifices of American soldiers who won their laurels at great cost. |

In the summer of 2006, Israel fought an intense 34-day war with Hezbollah, the first sustained modern air campaign conducted by a country other than the United States. As soon as the fighting was under way, many were declaring airpower oversold and inadequate. Commentators clamored for more-decisive ground action, asserting that only ground forces could defeat Hezbollah rocket fire, that the ground alternative would produce a "cleaner" and less tangled outcome, bring about different political realities, reduce civilian casualties and damage, and make greater gains in the battle for hearts and minds. When the Israeli government itself expressed its frustration with airpower and escalated ground fighting in the second week of the campaign, airpower critics felt vindicated. The antiairpower view could not help but further echo with all of the stark images of Beirut, the cavalcade of statistics of civilian deaths and destruction, and the departure of the chief of staff of the IDF just 6 months after the initial Hezbollah incursion across the Israeli border. What is more, despite all of the claimed Israeli military accomplishments, Hezbollah was declared as strong as ever. The war has thus been labeled a failure by many, and many of the war's ills are blamed on airpower. It is precisely because the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war was not fought by the United States, because it was an intense and technologically complex irregular conflict fought between a nation-state and a terrorist organization, and because it involved difficult questions of civilian protection and modern information warfare that the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. military should examine it closely. This study is weakened by the fact that Israel was extremely sparse in divulging details of either its air campaign or its ground activity. Hezbollah was even more secretive. The author was therefore consigned to the empirical task of divining Israeli and Hezbollah intent through examining destruction on the ground. |

Die Konstruktion dieses berühmtesten deutschen Transportflugzeuges war im Grunde nur das Ergebnis rein kaufmännischer Überlegungen im Management der Deutschen Lufthansa. Sie begannen bereits 1925. als Dipl.Ing. Kurt Weil und Hans M. Bongers vom "Junkers-Luftverkehr" ein wirtschaftliches dreimotori-ges Verkehrsflugzeug forderten. Aber erst 1928. zwei Jahre nach Gründung der "Deutschen Lufthansa", als man bei Junkers daran dachte, ein neues Verkehrsflugzeug zu entwickeln, wurden diese Gedanken wieder aufgegriffen. Chefkonstrukteur Dipl.Ing. Ernst Zindel. der mit der Durchführung der Konstruktion beauftragt wurde, stellte sich von vornherein auf zwei Ausführungen des Entwurfes - jetzt noch als J 52 bezeichnet -ein: ein einmotoriges Frachtflugzeug für die von Prof. Junkers geplante Luftfrachtverkehrsgesellschaft "Luftfrako International" und ein dreimo toriges Verkehrsflugzeug für maximal 17 Fluggäste, entsprechend den Forderungen der Deutschen Lufthansa (DLH). |
