In The Bay of Pigs, Howard Jones provides a concise, incisive, and dramatic account of the disastrous attempt to overthrow Castro in April 1961. Drawing on recently declassified CIA documents, Jones deftly examines the train of missteps and self-deceptions that led to the invasion of U.S.-trained exiles at the Bay of Pigs. Ignoring warnings from the ambassador to Cuba, the Eisenhower administration put in motion an operation that proved nearly unstoppable even after the inauguration of John F. Kennedy. Immediately following the Civil War, the United States Ordnance Department reported it had purchased 128,575 Remington revolvers during the conflict. During the Franco-Prussian War in 1870-71, Samuel Remington acted as an agent to acquire arms for the French War Ministry. Fifteen to twenty thousand Remington New Model Army revolvers were purchased from the Ordnance Department and sent to France. Donald Ware devoted twenty-five years of research in the Ordnance Department archives, the Remington factory's records, and Army and Navy records to assemble this detailed examination of the development and evolution of Remington revolvers from the beginning of the Civil War through the end of the Indian wars. In addition to information about the revolvers themselves, Ware shares tidbits that he uncovered along the way. For example, part of the equipment issued the Civil War soldier was a bullet mold for his revolver. During the War, the Ordnance Department issued combustible ammunition for revolvers, making the mold a superfluous appendage. To avoid carrying the extra weight, the mold was usually tossed away. In 1863 the Ordnance Department notified Remington there was no need to furnish molds with the revolvers and therefore saved the government eighteen cents on each revolver. |

The Mounted Troops of the British Army: 1066-1945 gives the history of the cavalryman's service from the days when the Normans brought the war horse to England, till garages replaced stables in military barracks. It deals with his uniform and equipment, his weapons and horses, and his life in peace and war. No attempt has been made to describe campaigns or battles, except to provide such background as is required to show the conditions under which the horse soldier fought, and the methods he used. The description of one regiment in 1836 is: the two right troops had bays, the third from the right chestnuts, the fouth duns, the fifth piebalds, skewbalds and horses of all colors, the sixth blacks, and the seventh and eighth grays. All these horses had long tails. The book consists of 256 pages plus 33 plates of illustrations, and line drawings. One drawing shows the encampment of a regiment of light dragoons; most illustrations and drawings show different uniforms, weapons and horse outfitting. |
