Beginning in the Civil War, the U.S. Army sought to find an effective system to distinguish troops from different units. In the closing days of World War I, it finally arrived at a practical and desirable solution with the adoption of the shoulder patch or shoulder sleeve insignia. For more than eighty years, this often simple device, has been the source of pride and inspiration for servicemen everywhere. This book (the first of a multi-volume set), with a gallery of more than 800 color and sepia toned illustrations of original insignia and period photographs, documents the evolution of these special insignia. From the period beginning with World War I to the Korean War era, you won't find a more indispensable guide for the study and collection of U.S. Army shoulder patches. Collectors will especially enjoy the handy reference section for determining whether a patch was made by an ally or a former foe. With special emphasis on theater made patches, this volume is sure to be a collector's paradise. Without a doubt, this is the finest and most complete effort to date on the subject.

Maximillian II Emmanuel was one of the premier military leaders of his time. He was often referred to as the "Blue King" because he nearly always wore his favorite color, blue. His well trained and drilled Bavarian army was likewise clad in their famous medium blue uniforms. A color which was worn by Bavarian soldiers over the next two centuries. In addition to being a great military leader in battles of the War of Spanish Succession and helping thwart the Turkish invasion of Europe Maximillian II Emmanuel was a pioneer patron of Baroque art and architecture. This is a fully restored reprint of 48 full color plates from the work by Anton Hoffman originally published in Germany in 1905.

This is an essential book for everyone with an interest in the German Army and the First World War. It is a thorough analysis of the uniforms, weapons and equipment employed by German forces between 1914 and 1918. From the mud and trenches of the Western Front to the snow and forests of the Eastern Front, it is the first book to take a comprehensive look at what the German soldier wore and fought with and how this was transformed by the experience of battle. The First World War was a cataclysmic combat, bringing home to European armies the full effect of modern industrialized warfare. The German Army, like its opponents, entered the war with uniforms more suited to the parade ground, but this was soon to change, bringing about the birth of the modern soldier in combat clothes. The ornamental spiked Picklehaube gave way to the steel Stahlhelm designed to protect the wearer against shrapnel wounds, the greatest killer of soldiers at the front. Camouflage appeared for the first time. Battlefield tactics were revolutionized and German soldiers became stormtroopers equipped with grenades and submachine guns.Stephen Bull's authoritative text is highly illustrated with over 150 colour and black and white photographs, and leading military artist Christa Hook has created four color plates for the book.

The authors give a detailed account of the conscription methods, the sistem of reserves and the general organisation of the German army. They also describe the uniforms worn by the German soldiers of the period, and trace the development of the flamboyant uniforms of 1900 into the drab field-grey of 1918.
The book contains many photographs of soldiers, equipment and individual items of uniform, together with eight pages of full colour illustrations.
