The Seven Years’ War (1756–1763) is the name given to the last great conflict involving all the major powers of Europe, except Turkey, before the French Revolutionary Wars. Described as the first truly "world war" it was fought partly in Europe, where Frederick the Great’s Prussia, aided by Great Britain, electoral Hanover, Hesse-Kassel and Brunswick challenged the combined might of Austria, France, other German states and Russia. The global context of the war refers to the so-called French and Indian War, which broke out in North America between the French and the British before 1756, and the continuing hostilities of that period between the French and British East India companies

The 5th SS Division "Wiking" was the first "international" (western European freiwilligen) Waffen-SS division and the only German armed forces panzer division comprised of foreign troops. Not only did it earn an esteemed combat reputation but also served as an SS "finishing school, " spinning off a host of additional divisions. Wiking operated exclusively on the Eastern Front. On the offense, it served as a spearhead for operations Barbarossa and Citadel. As a defensive "fire brigade, " it served in the Cherkassy pocket and in 1944 Hungary.
