Salvator Fabris (1544-1618) was an Italian fencing master from Padua. During his life he taught in various European countries, most notably in Denmark where he was the fencing instructor of King Christian IV. It was during his time in Copenhagen that he published his treatise on rapier fencing, Lo Schermo, overo Scienza d’Arme, in 1606. |

The Fechtbuch (Fight-Book).
Hans Talhoffer (c. 1420 - c. 1490) was a Fechtmeister (literally 'fencing master' or 'fight master'), employed as 'master of arms' to the Swabian knight Leutold von Konigsegg, a feudatory of Count Eberhardt the Bearded of Württemberg in southern Germany. He is the author of at least six Fechtbücher, illustrated treatises describing methods of fighting with bare hands, dagger, long sword, short sword, pole weapons, shields, maces, and on horseback.
This is the facsimile of the Alte Armatur und Ringkunst, which lets you see the words and pictures for yourself. Next are Jeffrey Hull's transcription of its German and translation of that into English – the transcription gives you direct comprehensible reference to the original German wording, while the translation gives you the first and only rendering of that wording into English. |

Capoferro's treatise "Great Representation of the Art and Use of Fencing" was printed by Salvestro Marchetti and Camillo Turi in Siena, and is divided into two parts: Art and Practice.
In the first part, he gives the general principles of swordsmanship and fencing, with the second part of his book covering actual techniques, described in text with accompanying illustrations. His work is interesting in that some methods that he denigrates in his theory he uses in his actions; most notably, he dismisses feints as dangerous or useless (depending upon the situation) and then uses them liberally in various actions in the second part of his book.
The book covers the use of single rapier, including basic sword grappling, as well as Rapier and dagger, Rapier and cloak, and Rapier and Rotella, a most unusual combination for the period, though far more common in the tradition of swordsmanship of the 16th century which preceded it. The Rotella is a medium size concave round shield of approximately 60 cm in Diameter with two straps to hold it. Similar metal shields survive, particularly from Spain in this period, though very few from Italy, implying that these shields were made of a perishable material such as wood or leather or a composite of such materials. The manual also includes techniques for fighting against a left-handed opponent. |

The sabre, with the rapier and epee, has been the third arm of fencing for centuries, and also served as the major cavalry weapon. The art of fencing with the sabre is significantly different to the delicacy of epee or the thrust of rapier, and this book explains why. Hutton begins by looking at the construction of the sabre and how to hold it. This is followed by an explanation of the different strokes and defences, and how to combine attack and defence. He then progresses to the more advanced art of sabre fencing, and how left-handed swordsmen should fight. The treatment is in considerable detail, and is as relevant today for the sabre fencer as when the book was first published, in 1889. Hurtton's treatise on the sabre continues with the ceremonial aspects of the art. He also looks at sabre against bayonet, and the French sword. There are descriptions of assocaited weapons such as the great stick and the constable's truncheon, and the book concludes with a look at the sword-bayonet, short sword and dagger. There are numerous illustrations in the book, with a total of 55 movement drawing diagrams. |
