This study is an overview of the history of the development, design, and manufacture of bronze muzzle-loading ordnance, which were widely used by the world’s military forces from the 16th to mid-19th centuries. Discussion is limited for the most part to guns (what are usually termed cannon), but also to mortars, howitzers, and to a lesser degree types such as the carronade and swivel gun.
