With its immense capacity for adsorption from gas and liquid phases, activated carbon is a unique material. It occupies a special place in terms of producing a clean environment involving water purification as well as separations and purification in the chemical and associated industries. Conventional methods of synthesis of metal complexes as a rule involve use of metal salts or carbonyls. The final coordination or organometallic compounds are obtained as a result of a direct interaction of components (ligand and metal source), as well as by the exchange of ligands or metals, and using template synthesis. Meanwhile, the possibility of obtaining compounds directly from compact metals by the action of an electrical current was demonstrated at the end of the 19th century. Later it was reported that the synthesis of metal complexes from metals may be achieved in the gaseous phase (metals react in the form of atoms, ions or small particles), in solutions in the presence of oxidants or in donor-acceptor systems, and under surface friction conditions.

Supercritical fluid carbon dioxide (SF-C02) with its moderate critical constants, nonflammable nature and low cost provides an attractive alternative for replacing organic solvents traditionally used in chemical manufacturing processes. Minimizing liquid waste generation, easy separation of solutes and fast reaction rates are some of the advantages of the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) technology over conventional solvent extraction methods. The solvation strength of supercritical C02 can be tuned by changing the density of the fluid phase, thus selective extraction and dissolution of compounds may be achieved in SFE processes. Because C02 is not regulated by the US EPA as a volatile organic compound, C02-based SFE processes are environmentally acceptable. The CO2 used in SFE is produced by other industrial processes (e.g. fermentation processes), therefore the gas vented into the atmosphere from the SFE processes does not contribute to the "green house" effect.

Impurities play an important role in different spheres of our day-to-day life. For example, trace amounts of impurities present in crystalline solids have a profound influence on their mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical properties. Consequently, the performance of different types of devices based on these solids depends on the nature and concentration of impurities present in them. Trace amounts of impurities present in a growth medium also have a strong influence on the processes of nucleation of crystallizing phases of the same substance and the subsequent growth of the nucleated phase. Typical examples of such processes are: beneficial mineralization such as the formation of bone and tooth, and pathological mineralization such as formation of human kidney stones, scale formation in domestic appliances and industrial plants, and crystallization of saturated fatty acid methyl ester components of biodiesel during cold seasons, clogging fuel lines and filters of engines.
