First published in 1991, revised in 1996, and here presented in its third iteration, this six-volume reference is written for high school students and lay adults and is intended as an authoritative, accessible source of information about all fields of science. Arrangement of some 2,000 entries is alphabetical, and, somewhat redundantly, each volume devotes 19 pages to an alphabetical listing of all topics in the set. the subject index is in volume 6. Unfortunately, a thematic listing of entries is not provided. This deficiency makes it difficult to determine how material has been selected or balanced among the disciplines and to understand what types of entries (e.g. biographies, animal descriptions, diseases) predominate. Each signed entry includes a short listing of books, periodicals, and other resources, as well as cross references-- which could have been aggregated to prepare a thematic index. Key terms are highlighted in bold type (a distraction for some readers). handily, definitions are included in boxes within the articles, but a comprehensive glossary would have been useful. Photos (most in color) and some diagrams support rather than dominate the text. |

I make a few remarks on the new publication of Hsing-i: Chinese Mind-Body Boxing, first issued in 1974. Taiji, Pa Kua, and Hsing-i compromise what the Chinese call nei-chia, the internal or soft boxing arts, as contrasted with Shaolin, or hard and more forceful boxing methods. Taiji stresses relaxed slow movements and Pa Kua the use of the open hand and the circle. Hsing-i uses largely the fist on a linear path. All borrow from the other. Over the years my book on Hsing-i had many readers and helped to introduce the art to western readers. Its success was largely due to such teachers as Yuan Tao, Wang Shu-chin, and Hung I-hsiang who taught me during my stay in Taiwan (1959-62). Whatever skill I gained I attribute to them. I was very lucky. Now so many years later, I'm pleased to see Hsing-i reemerge. I hope it helps a new generation to find joy in this old but evergreen art. |

An advisory board of seven distinguished genetics specialists (clinical geneticists and genetic counselors) oversaw the accuracy of the text, which is authored by an international slate of clinicians, genetic counselors, and medical writers. Each of the alphabetically arranged entries follows a standard format definition, description, genetic profile, demographics, and signs and symptoms designed to answer the questions healthcare consumers actually ask. In addition, entries provide citations for further reading, contact information for support and advocacy organizations, and recommendations for notable web sites. Cross references for subjects without entries are interspersed throughout the work and are easy to follow. The key terms box that appears in select entries and provides succinct and understandable definitions is especially noteworthy. Other special features include a comprehensive glossary, a chromosome map, a guide to symbols for pedigree charts, and an organizations directory all features that should make understanding difficult genetics concepts much easier.
