A comprehensive analysis of all three aspects of woven design . . . technical, aesthetic, and personal. Every year the number of serious weavers increases. Every season finds new arts and crafts exhibits of weaving, and hand-woven fabrics are now readily available in many fashionable department stores and boutiques. Weaving, along with a few other crafts, has proven itself to be a permanent part of the professional craft scene. The need for information on how to design and create weaving is greater than ever, and this book makes an important addition to any weaver's library. The book presents a structured method for studying drafting as a design tool, along with the technical and aesthetic aspects of color and design as they apply to all types of weaving. The author has found through many years of designing, weaving, and teaching that to design a successful fabric requires a synthesis of these aspects of design: The technical aspect refers to the craft. . . the mastery of the process of the loom is covered in the first part of the book. Aesthetics, refering to the awareness and sensitivity involved in the process of selecting and arranging, is covered in part two, and the personal aspect, refering to expression of one's own personality and the process of developing unique woven pieces is dealt with in part three. Because the book is organized so it will be useful for the beginning and intermediate level weaver, nothing has been taken for granted in any section of the book. For example, elementary points of drafting are discussed thoroughly as a foundation for the rest of the chapters on technical aspects of design; and the section on color begins with the basis of color terminology. With its numerous diagrams, line illustrations, and photographs-both in color and black and white, especially created for this book by the author-it is an excellent self-study guide that will help any weaver approach a design problem with less intimidation and be able to create many unique and personal woven statements.
