Simon Jones's graphic history of underground warfare during the Great War uses personal reminiscences to convey the danger and suspense of this unconventional form of conflict. Concentrating on the struggle for ascendancy by the British tunnelling companies on the Western Front, Jones's wide-ranging study also tells the story of the little known but fascinating subterranean battles fought in the French sectors of the Western Front. It also includes the gripping conflict between the Austrians and the Italians in the Alps, described in English for the first time.

The 10th Cavalry Regiment is a unit of the United States Army. Formed as a segregated African-American unit, the 10th Cavalry was one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" regiments. It served in combat during the Indian Wars in the western United States, the Spanish-American War in Cuba and in the Philippine-American War. It was the only African-American unit under American command that fought German soldiers (advisors) in World War I. The regiment was trained as a combat unit but later relegated to non-combat duty and served in that capacity in World War II until its deactivation in 1944.

During the latter part of 1933 Willy Messerschmitt and a team of designers at Bayerische Flugzeug-werke AC began work on a four-seat, high-performance sports monoplane of lightweight metal construction with such relative novelties as a retract¬able undercarriage, wing slots, wing flaps and an enclosed cabin. The result was the Bf 108, which itself deserves the accolade 'classic'; many examples still fly to this day. The design incorporated several features that remained unique for many years and adopted a general layout that has been followed in light aircraft design for decades. The aircraft was a complete success and many of the innovations intro¬duced with the type were to be carried on to the next project.

It has been said in China that a city without a wall would be as inconceivable as a house without a roof. Even the smallest village invariably had some form of defensive wall, while the Great Wall of China was an attempt to build a barrier along the most vulnerable border of the entire country. Yet the finest examples of walled communities were China’s walled cities, whose defensive architecture surpassed anything along the Great Wall. This book traces the evolution of the walled city from the 3,000 year old remains of the beaten earth walls of the Shang dynasty to the huge stone fortifications of the Ming dynasty. Stephen Turnbull, expert military historian, reveals the defensive structures from all the major ancient Chinese cities, and discusses how they protected entire communities, and not just castle dwellers, with colour artwork reconstructions, maps and archive photographs.

The Ottoman Army was the first to employ the 'triangular division', starting from 1910, which contained three infantry regiments of three battalions supported by an artillery regiment of three battalions. This structure went on to become the world's standard. In the years immediately prior to the outbreak of World War I, the Ottoman Army undertook a massive retraining program to rebuild its forces following the Balkan Wars of 1912-13.

A pictorial history of the war in the air of 1914-18, this book covers the war from the first tentative acts of aggression in the air in 1914 to the employment of massive air power by the war's end. Subjects covered include: the early attempts to arm aircraft, the Zeppelin raids, the appearance of fighter "aces", the early employment of carrier-based aircraft, the development of the heavy bomber and of night flying, the formation of the United States Air Service (USAS), and the creation of the Royal Air Force - the world's first independent air arm - in 1918. Also presented are the exploits of American volunteer pilots flying with the legendary Lafayette Escadrille. The book does not restrict its scope to the Western Front; also covered are air operations in the Middle East and Central Europe, as well as the air attacks on British and German towns and cities.

The language of the note was stiff. Written in Tokyo at the end of November, 1944, and then handed over to the Ministerio De Asuntos Exteriores in Madrid by the Japanese government's represen-tative on 2 December, it was finally delivered by the Spanish Embassy to the United States Depart¬ment of State in Washington, D.C., on 4 Decem¬ber. As one of the rare yet rational diplomatic notesexchanged between the two primary antagonists of the Pacific War, it revealed far more about the desperate defense preparations made by Japan in its last year of war than its writers would have wished to convey.

William Wolf brings his meticulous research to describe the little known Douglas B-18 Bolo which was America's most numerous front line bomber at the time of Pearl Harbor. Over the years the story of the airliner turned bomber has languished in obscurity and the few articles on the subject in popular aviation magazines have emphasized its faults and maligned it as a budget bomber that had few virtues. Wolf's comprehensive book is the first ever on the subject and gives the reader the definitive description and appraisal of this neglected bomber's development, testing, manufacture, the aircraft per se, and combat experience.
