Прогнозируется, что в современных слаборазвитых государствах количество отходов удвоится в следующем десятилетии. В случае неправильного управления отходами они становятся значительным родником загрязнения среды. Сегодня человечество в своем хозяйственном действии использует примерно 100000 токсических веществ, которых в природе не существует и влияние которых на живые существа и экосистему в общей сложности мало изучена. Эти токсические вещества после своего использования попадают в места захоронения отходов. Каждый год это число увеличивается на 500 - 1000 новых видов. Как признанно, главная причина данной ситуации - недальновидная модель производства и потребления, которая сегодня существует главным образом в экономически развитых государствах. Человеческая активность создает дополнительную нагрузку окружающей среде, засоряя её выбросами технологических процессов, дальнейшая очистка которых не всегда является соответствующей возможностям природы.
